I can't wait for spring to get here. Here are some pics of some of the garlic I grew last year. Last pic is of the garlic cloves I planted in October from my own seed stock. I planted 172 of the biggest cloves I had and ate all the smaller ones. Anyone else grow garlic?

WOW!!!!! Nice garlics. "Sigh" ... I didn't plant any garlics this fall, for the first time in years.
I'm taking a year off from the big veggie garden, too much on my plate right now, but I know I'll be back at it eventually.
I'll post a pic of the harvest from this summer.

Great pic Mamabigbird! What variety of garlic do you have there?

Neat pictures! What is the best way to store garlic?
I hang mine up in my lean-to where they are sheltered from rain but lots of air movement for about 10 days and then I trim the root hairs and remove stems, leaving an inch or two.
Then I let them dry a bit more indoors on newspaper. Finally I put them in brown paper bags in my back entryway (dry and cool).

I usually pick out the biggest ones with the most cloves for replanting.
Now I'll have to start from scratch because I didn't replant any this year.

Ya, but not huge like yours! What's your secret? Also, Mine don't store well.

Well some types of garlic grow larger then others. Mine is a porcelain variety that I have been growing for a few years that I call Brickyard. Good seed stock is needed, as is soil. The larger the clove you plant the larger the potential for big heads if everything else is optimal. Light fluffy well draining soil high in OG matter/compost is ideal. My garden is organic and I have built my soil up really well over the years so I don't use much fert. a little fish and seaweed emulsion and thats about it. as for storing garlic that depends on variety also- some store much longer then others. Make sure its well cured before you store it. We hang ours up in large onion bags after it has cured in the basement that has moderate humidity and air circulation and stays around 55-60F.

See above

I don't actually remember what variety they were, I've been replanting for so many years, but I know they weren't elephant garlics.
They have purplish skins next to the clove and white on the outside.
They are extremely oily and pungent.

Sounds like some good stuff!

We are growing garlic, in the past mom has been growing it (or it has been growing itself) but she was never really happy with it. I set up a new garden for those fall/winter planting veggies and one whole end we dedicated to garlic. We raced up and picked out some special garlic when it came in to the local feed store (they have the best variety of organics there) We planted it in nicely prepared rows. Because we had some, for a kick we planted a bunch of the California Garlic we picked up at Costco.

Well, the only thing up is the costco garlic and the volunteers that Mom does not like to start with. The $$$ stuff...well lets hope it is busy building a big root system
