My original brooder that I posted was 28 inches wide and just four foot long. I had six in it, At three weeks they were out of it and I put them in the second brooder I posted which is huge, as well as they were so ready to go outside.  Congrats Barred rocks are such fun. I have two myself.

A big thanks to everyone who put photos of their brooders in here. After six months on thinking about getting chicks it gave me the confidence to think I could do it. The local feed store, when I called this morning, said they were getting chicks at 10:30 A.M. and I picked up 25 for me and 25 for my neighbor who already has chickens.
The girls are very comfortable, the human rooster (hubby) thinks they are cute and the one dog who is interested has been good.
They are in the spare bedroom, under a light. Some Golden Wyandots, Some green eggs layers and some Rhode Islands. Wish us luck.

One hubby, two dogs, 27 chickens (Rhode Island Reds, Golden Wyandottes, Black Australorps and ??????) on 2.5 acres.
Good girls go to heaven but bad girls get to go everywhere.

Golden Wyandottes, Rhode Island Reds and Araucanas. Though the girl behind the feed counter said they were Rhode Island Browns.

Looks great--chicks look really healthy.  They grow like weeds, so have a larger space ready fairly soon.  You will love having them.  Just a tip, keep an eye on the "interested dog".  LOL

We made our brooder out of a plastic bin and some hardware cloth. My DH used nuts, washers, and bolts to affix the hardware cloth, so it didn't crack the plastic lid. He used plumber's strapping (the metal strip with holes in it) for the legs on the light. This way, I can adjust it's distance as the chicks' heat needs reduce.

Here's a shot of the brooder with its light on.

This is a closer image of the light. When I need to move the lamp further away, I just move the bolt into a different hole on the strip and make the leg taller.
