If we want to be picky a "car" is a box that runs on rails. Its use as a slang term for a automobile has added it to the dictionary as a term that means automobile. A truck is a type of car. So is a SUV. But again, no one cares. None of these terms are misunderstood when used.

Like me calling it a coke. Everyone in the south knows coke covers all brands an cocacola is a brand.....  But then, I only drink cocacola cokes. big_smile.png

Had my cousins kid come in one day an ask for "some soda".... I gave him the arm & hammer box out of the fridge.  Thats what soda is here. I knew what he wanted but could not resist. He just stood there lost till i took it back gave him a coke.

I've seen people ask for a pop though an get hit.

Then there are those who call "carbonated beverages" a tonic or frap. Those yankees know who they are!

Never heard frap but I have heard tonic even down here. Most came out as magic cure alls back when you could claim anything about a product so I guess the name would have fit.

Yep, rebelcowboysnb.  Folks who aren't from the South, especially rural South, just don't get our vernacular.  When I was a young'un, we had chocolate cocolers (yahoo's), grape and "erenge" cocolers (Nehi grape and orange dranks) and regular cocolers (which was usually a Coca-Cola or a RC cola.)

It was so weird when I came out west to school.  It's called "pop".  And paper bags are "sacks".  The ditch on the side of the road is the "borrow pit" which I had to look up.  The glove compartment is the "jockey box".  It was like I went to a different country to attend college.  And every vehicle (regardless of size) is a "rig".
