I put my eggs in last night so really their first day is not over with. Anyone want to join? This is my first time and it would be cool if I could kind of do it with someone else. Anyone welcome!

I spent months researching what breed I wanted when I decided to get chickens about 4 years ago. I settled on the Welsummer for their reputaion as a great back-yard all-purpose bird, which is...

I have two Wyandottes - a silver-laced and a gold-laced. They don't seem to be as good layers as my Barred Rock, but I don't keep good statistics. They are never willing to be held and they...

This was a good chicken who was medium friendly. She didn't like to be held but she liked to perch on my shoulder, which was funny. However, one day I came home to a distraught sister bird and...

My Orp was an ok hen before she was eaten by a raccoon. She laid well, which is really all I really cared about, but she was the least friendly of my first three chickens. Didn't like to be...

After having owned five different chicken breeds (1 individual of each), I have to say that my favorite so far has been my Barred Rock. She is sweet, docile, will fall asleep in my arms, and...
Anyone starting a hatch today?
What kind of incubator are you using?
I have a batch of quail that I'm going to have to hatch in my Sportsman though, as the LG will be full of chickens.
What are you hatching?
I am hatching silkies. Just 4 of them. I figure take it slow the first time. I am using the LG. I know some people don't like it but I have been doing good so far. At least I think so. LOL!
I've only got five in this weekend's hatch, and one's a pretty small pullet egg. Blue Laced Red Wyandottes this time, but I have Silver Laced in later batches. I have two Blue Andalusian eggs in the batch I'm setting tomorrow, but previous eggs from that pen haven't been fertile yet.

I placed 8 eggs in the bator today. 5 dominiques, 2 polish/silkies, and 1 bantam egg from a polish/silkie mix. I've been staggering hatches and the ones just set will be staggered set #5. Today I have a 2 week old frizzled polish/silkie mix (he was a late hatch and is an only chick). In the other brooder, I have an early hatcher who is all alone, but there are 5-6 pipped eggs in the hatcher now. These will be white and brown leghorns with a couple of unknowns from Dad. All the eggs I'm currently hatching or incubating are for other folks. I place an add locally and offer my hatching service free of charge. This is my first time with goose eggs. There are 4 of those in the bator too.
I put 16 silkie eggs in the incubator at 9 this morning.
This is my first hatch, ever.
I'm a nervous wreck! I'm still trying to stabilize the temp at 100* since putting the eggs in. Then, I just re-read in the directions (of my old Brower 845) to keep the temp between 101 and 102?????????? I was aiming for 99-100, but maybe that's the temperature I should shoot for since that's what the directions say??? Any thoughts?
Wife of 1 wonderful husband, homeschooling mom to 1 super son and "MamaRoo" to 1 Shih-Tzu (that can't be trusted around my chicks), 1 RIR, 1 BO, 1 PBR and we provide room & board to occasional Cornish X (give or take 8 weeks)!

Not exactly the same thing, but I put 12 eggs under my broody hen around noon today. I was lucky enough to have someone on the boards here local and kind enough to give me some eggs - my roo(s) are still babies. I'm very excited and hoping that in a few weeks we see Mama walking around our yard with little fluffy fuzz following her around. This is going to be difficult for me - I'm so OCD about things like this, it's going to be very difficult to just sit back and let mother nature (or mother hen) take its' course.
These are the first eggs we've ever tried to hatch.

Ohhh, I WISH these eggs were under a broody hen. That seems to take all the responsibility off of you at least. If they were in the 'bator' your OCD would totally kick in-mine has! I'm checking the temp (from the window) every 5 minutes. And I have 3 weeks to go!![]()
