Galvanized waterers

We use a galvanized waterer. If you keep it up off the ground (we put cement blocks just under the edges so it's open underneath) it will help keep it from rusting because it's not sitting in moisture. We've never had a problem when the old ones start to rust.
 
I will say that the newer galvanized waterers being sold in a lot of the big box farm stores rust much faster than the older ones ever did. We bought one in September that now looks like it's 40 years old. We keep it off the ground. It still works fine but the metal is not of a very good quality.
 
Don't mean to hijack the thread, bu I wonder about rust on the INSIDE of the galvanized waterers, where it's obviously gong to moist all the time -- mine rusted in about two months.
 
So, Oldguy, is zinc leching from the waterers into my chickens?

Swatchick, I don't have any problem at all with the inners. Maybe the atmosphere has something to do with it.

I'm sorry if my post was misleading and caused you concern. If you only use low to neutral ph water than there is no danger. However, if you use any acidic additives such as vinegar than there is a very real danger of zinc poisoning to your flock. If your waterers are showing any signs of corrosion, other than rust I would recommend removing them immediately. Flakes of galvanizing are also toxic so if the coating is flaking off get them away from your birds.
