Toys for Chicks

I just put the roll from the papers towel in the brooder.. It was pretty funny watching the reaction. I hope to make a little roost for them tomorrow.

Chicken play

I've tried numerous toys
Mirror, teddy, large tube to run through, budgie hanging toys( bell, beads)
Ribbon, string pegs etc etc
And I've found as with most animals and children they enjoy playing more if you play too

So I spin the peg round on the cage bar , and they fight to spin it with their beaks
I ring the bell, they ring the bell
I drag the ribbon they chase it
Get the picture

I've just found a new game, I sit the chicken on my desk and move the mouse cursor around,
She doesn't half chase it tapping it with her beak
She's really fast too
Its a white cursor obviously a good colour for them to see

But getting the poop out from between the keys can be a pain...

My sister ( 9 yo) built them a little tree, with a longer board on bottom and a shorter board on top. We had them in a medium-sized water trough, and we placed it in there. When ever we cleaned it out, we put the spray nozzle on high and SCRUBBED it. The poop comes off really easily, so thats good.

We now have them in a extra-large AKC kennel, with chicken wire wrapped all around it. We slid old mardi gras necklaces in there, tying them up and letting them peck. We have 11, 5 australorps and 6 golden sex-links. They enjoyed it really well, and kept pecking at it constantly. Hope this helped!

We've had these two for just 14hrs and they are attached to me. They are in a tote currently but I'm curious it it would be a good idea to use my 55gal tank as a "playroom" for them.

You ought to take advantage of the mild climate where you live and take the babies outdoors for a romp on a day when the temp is in the 70s. Yep! You can let them out of the warm brooder for a little while. Just watch for signs that they might be getting chilled.

But the point of taking them outdoors is to let them flex their wings and fly. Most people think chicks have to be confined to the brooder for two months. Not so. Brief "field trips" on warm days is very good for them. It's what mama hen would do.

And it'll do your heart good to see them having so much darned fun!

Don't be afraid you won't be able to catch them when it's time to go in. If you've been giving them treats, you already have them trained to come to you. Just show them the treat!

I HEAR YOU COULD GIVE THEM AN EMPTY TUBE TO PLAY IN

My kids gave them the cat's plastic ball with a bell inside. They seem to play with it a bit and actually will chase after it if you toss it across the brooder. We also put in small chunks of wood or small stumps and let them climb and peck and play. We change things around at least once every day. Treats are good entertainment. So are the kids because they are constantly talking to them, petting them, or gently picking them up. We haven't had any problems with pecking yet.

I made toys out of duct tape for my chicks. The chicks just went nuts over them. They need to be larger than the chick's beak, but not too large to be easily carried around. I put lots of angles on mine to be sure they couldn't swallow them. It was fine for several weeks, but now there beginning to pull them apart. I wouldn't recommend these toys to chicks over 7 weeks of age.
Grasshoppers are a big hit. A big tough grasshopper can last for hours. I typically start giving the chicks grasshoppers at a week of so of age. I do stun or kill the grasshoppers prior to throwing them in.

I wanted to be able to sit in comfort when I play with my three chicks, now eleven weeks old, so I stuffed some foam cushions into a couple of empty feed sacks. Much to my surprise, the chicks have taken them over. They love to play on them as well as rest, as you can see. I grabbed a few more empty feed sacks and stuffed straw into them then stapled them closed so the straw wouldn't leak out. The whole flock loves to play and rest on them now as well.

That's their adoptive broody mama, Su-su. She decided that they needed adopting about a month ago when they were already six weeks old. She actually went broody for the occasion, and still is. She sleeps, eats, and dirt bathes with them and is always watching over them.
