Buff Orpingtons are great, but can be a little loud at times. I'm in the East so wouldn't know about predators in your area (apart from the two obvious ones - your doggies).

I love my colombian rocks! They all leave an egg in the nest box every day. I also have Americanas they lay beautiful blue-green eggs. They aren't the best if you want a broody hen though, but I did have a colombian rock go broody but I took her eggs and she never went broody again.
