Hi, i am planning to get a pair of button quails in the spring but i would like to know as much as possible before i get them.

with 1male and 1female how big does the cage have to be?

would a small rabbit cage work?

what do they eat?

can they become very tame?

how much do they cost on adverage( a pair)?

should i get fledlings, babies or adults? (your opinion)

can they live in your room?
kind regards,

A simple parakeet cage works for a pair. Make sure with any cage that the wire bars aren't too wide so they don't squeeze out. You can take out wire bottoms as their feet are so tiny.

Everything is really in the stickies here but I will still help out :)

The feed: Gamebird starter unmedicated crumbles of at least 24% protein. Finch seeds can be added in for adults. Oyster shells can be added to their bedding.

Tameness: Button quail are look at me birds. They have a stress mechanism that when you pick them up or hold them they start loosing feathers. This is so they can escape in the wild setting.

Price depends on the breeder but I do emphasize to get a pair from someone who knows what they are talking about.

I highly recommend getting adults vs the juveniles or chicks.

thanks for the info, i will look at the stickies :D my dresser is 30 inches long by 17 inches wide. is it big enough to put a cage on or will i have to put it on the floor?? also what is the minimum area that your button quails need need to live happily??

thanks,
Lucky

My pair is in a 41x18 inch rabbit cage and love it! You should get the biggest cage you possibly can. They like having a lot of places to hide and explore. Here is a picture of my cage. My hen likes to lay her eggs in the little hidey-hole the plants make

Her and her husband are behind the plants in this picture. As you can see I spoil them rotten because they are my only pair so I can afford to. I made them a little island paradise! They love going in the little straw hut and through the tunnel and sleep together on the alfalfa hay next to their feeder.

Not sure where in Fl. you are Craigslist St. Petersburg is where I got mine. She was great to deal with. Let me know if you need #
