Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long! - Page 1066

I went to the school, and it turns out there's TWO out! They're both ameraucanas, but I can tell they're mixed. I know one has pink toes, and it looks like one has a single comb.

The remaining four are all pipped.  I am worried about the two BCM since they've both been pipped for an awful long time now (the one has been a good 24 hours).  I could see all four beaks moving, and they all *seem* to be ok.

I'll probably wait to turn in my numbers until the last minute because I feel like my odds are pretty good of getting all six chicks to hatch, but a deadline is a deadline.

awww, thanks!

#5 is out!  She's a black copper marans, and had been pipped almost 24 hours.

The BCM/lav am mutt looks like it'll be really pretty. Instead of being jet black where a bcm is, it's a dark silvery gray color. Can't tell if the legs will be feathered yet or not.

At this point, I only have one left to hatch. It's pipped, but nowhere near ready to come out. I'm hoping she makes an appearance by 3:15 today. I am going to go turn in my number as 5, even though it'll definitely be 6. I just don't think that last one will hatch by noon.

I do find it interesting that I kept humidity fairly low for the hatch, maybe around 35-40% during incubation. When the first BCM came out, there was a lot of goop in the egg. I feel lucky she didn't drown. I can't tell yet on the second chick, she still had a bit of yolk sac attached to her (mostly detached, and looks like scrambled egg, so I'm not worried) and I don't want to take her out of the incubator yet.

The lav am eggs were dry inside. So, I do think it's true that BCM need lower humidity to hatch well.

OMG yesterday was a long day and I haven't added what my hatch was. I got a whole 6 out of the 104 that went into lockdown. Granted there was a ton of eggs I couldn't candle since I couldn't see through the shells. I did get one from my purple egg to hatch and the rest are from the same project, just don't know if I'll get purple layers yet.

BTW   Today's hatch I have 2 out and a pip. There's only a dozen eggs I think due today, but what an improvement HUH?

I posted this question over in disease/injuries but havent heard from anyone there and since its about a chick that I hatched with the hatchalong, I thought I would ask you fine folk here:)

One of the chicks that hatched appeared to be splay legged. I did the bandaid brace thing for her and have been closely monitoring her since I found it yesterday morning. This morning, however, when I took her bandaids off to check on her legs, it looks like it has to be something other than splay leg. Her foot is turned around at a weird angle. I have a picture for you, but its not the best.

I am really sorry about your chick. hugs.gif

I don't know what to do except to splint the leg and try to get it to stay in the correct position. Everyone says to then put it into a cup to keep it upright and to feed it water and chick food.

I hope it works out for the chick!
