Yeah, maybe this pic shows better, the grass is so long it's hard to see their legs clearly. You can see the feathers on her outside toes and down her back leg though. She is absolutely a brahma, both parents are. She has not one white feather.

My daughter, everything to me, but all I have to do for her is be.

Left is Leafy: my DD's favourite chicken. He thunders around the garden offering me treats, and crows like an old owl...!

I brooded once with near-boiling water.  The power went out all night, and I had day-olds!  I heated water on my gas heat stove and poured it into large Pyrex containers, wrapped the glass with a towel so that they couldn't burn themselves, and set it into the center of the brooder.  The water held its temp really well, and I only had to get up once in the middle of the night to replace the hot water.  They snuggled up against the towel all around in a circle like it was a nice, warm hen.  I bought a hot water bottle this year, so I'll probably use that instead if it happens again.

So jealous, but CONGRATS!

I want to see how that's made. Wonder if my half a brain would remember to boil water?

I said, "KEITH! Does that incubator work?!!!"
"Yeah," he replied, with his usual teenage lethargy. "But it is for lizards."
"Nuh-uh! It is a Hovabator 160N or whatever. Are you still hatching lizard eggs? I thought you got rid of most of the reptiles."
"I did" he said. "You can have it if you want. I am too old for lizards."
...and I walked home with a brand-spanking new Hovabator. I think my FIL was happy there wouldn't be another llizard population explosion. My DH was a little bit less happy---but now I have a hatcher-bator AND something to take egg-overflow. WOOOHOOO!

Could you use hand warmers in an emergency? They stay hot for 7 hours and a package is not too expensive for emergencies.

I set 60 Dorkng eggs yesterday. I am trying some of the secrets on here. I will post some pictures in a day or do.

There's going to be a public art installation in my town (Lawrence, KS) where they'll have 5 hens downtown in parks and whatnot for 3 weeks, then a public slaughter, then a potluck with them the next day. I'm conflicted. Great, let's educate...but public slaughter as art?

barnie.gif

It's not a small town (100K). It's a college town (Kansas Jayhawks). We have a lovely walking downtown with historic buildings and street musicians and occasionally buskers. We see several thousand out-of-town shoppers weekly because of the wonderful restaurants and atmosphere, shops, etc. I get it...but...

Is it art?

It's all over the news...
