It's not a small town (100K) It's a college town (Kansas Jayhawks) We have a lovely walking downtown with historic buildings and street musicians and occasionally buskers.

Is it art?

It's all over the news...

Interesting, for sure. Hmmm, honestly....... I think that is great. A great way for people to see where their food comes from. I applaud them!

Art?   No, I do not see it as art.

Hey everyone! I message Mahonri to let him know I was in so I didn't get lost in the posts. lol.png I'll be hatching 2 dozen RIR eggs. I wish I could sneak another breed over on my dad, but the only other breed I have are games. One of them is currently broody and it's her first year. I suppose I could ask my neighbor down the road for some of his EEs.... Now there's an idea! tongue2.gif

Chickens: 4 RIR hens, 1 BA hen, 1 BA/RIR. Ducks: 1 Mallard drake, 1 Mallard hen, and 8 little ducklings. Coturnix Quail. Everything else: 3 dogs, 6 cats, a pot bellied pig and one stubborn Mustang that rules the field!

I am recruiting. flower.gif   This is what I posted on a few of the more active breed threads. Think it will work?

Just thought I would stop by to tell you all a little about the annual Mahonri Easter Hatch, and give you a little sample of the fun there. There are TONS of contests and prizes in the works. Some contests have actually already started, and MANY more are coming. (I always like the "caption this," contest.emoticon, smiley, animated gif of yes, no, o.k).  To let you in on a little secret..... some of the prizes are gonna be VERY valuable! Many contests have not even been announced yet. So, if you are interested, check it out here.

Mahonri's 3rd Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long Contests

1. Best Hatch Rate  chick-hatch.gif

For this contest during this hatch, participants will need to be setting a minimum of 24 eggs, with confirmation picture posted to this thread on set day. These can be under a couple of broodies or in your incubators. Tell us how many you will have cooking and then don't go back and edit your post where you tell us how many eggs you start with. We'll need that info by Monday the 19th of March at latest to be included in the contest. When the hatch is over, you'll take a pic and post it to show us how many you actually got...the picture must be of sufficient quality to count all the chicks.
In the event of a tie, the one who hatches the most chicks wins.

2. Cutest  [image]  Chick Picture

For this contest, the chick hatched must be from Mahonri's 3rd Annual BYC Easter Hatch. The picture will need to be taken and posted by or before 11:59PM on April 15th, 2012... We'll be asking folks in the hatch as well as some moderators to help judge if they are willing.  There will be 1st and 2nd place awards given.

3. [image]  Best Overall Hatch Participant  [image]

At the end of the hatch, PM your choice for best hatch participant to Mahonri. This should be someone who you thought was supportive, helpful, funny, encouraging... The person with the most votes wins! Votes will start on April 10th and end on April 12th, 2012.

4. How Many Chicks  chick  Will Mahonri Hatch?

Your guess needs to be made before 11:59:59PM on March 24th, 2012.  The guesses will be posted above somewhere beside the hatch participant's name.
In order to help break a tie, You'll need to guess the breeds of the first three chicks out. If you want to know what breeds are in Mahonri's bators read the thread!  Laree will be putting up a spreadsheet for the # of guesses and the first three breeds.

5. CayuseRanch's  smiley   Total Number of Eggs Set Contest

This contest is open to all participants to guess the total number of eggs that will be set by all participants in Mahonri's 3rd Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!  Each participant is to fill out the spreadsheet with their guess as to the total number of eggs that participants will be placing in their incubators for this hatch.  All "guesses" must be submitted no later than Midnight EST, Sunday March 11th.  Please submit your total number of eggs set to the spreadsheet by Midnight EST Tuesday, March 20th so we can tally up what was set and declare a winner.  The person who comes closest to guessing the total number without going over will win a beautiful rooster egg basket.

Go here to submit your guess for the number of eggs set:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dE5FSUpmRmdCWXJZV1BlampFOUxCSkE6MQ#gid=0

Prize: 300x300px-LL-1ac939ac_Roosterbasket.jpeg

6. Kathyinmo's  [image]  Calendar Photo Contest

The goal is to make a poultry and holiday themed calendar. Submit your poultry related holiday pictures - all ranges of poultry age accepted. You will need to submit your photos on this thread as well as PM them to kathyinmo. Submission of your picture(s) to this thread and to kathyinmo means that you are giving permission to use their photo in a calendar printing. Open now, this contest runs thru Tue, April 10.

Limit of 3 entries per person. Entries will be posted here.

7. Notafarm's   [image]   An Opportune Time Award

Three random post numbers have been chosen (known only to NotAFarm and SCG). The person who posts at that "opportune time" gets the award. You need not be a hatch participant to win this.

Prizes: Each post winner will receive a 6 mo GFM

8. ChestnutRidge's turkey  Most Ingenious Chicken Design Contest

During whatever week it is assigned, post a picture and brief explanation of your cool brooder / feeder / waterer / saddle / whatever that you created for your fowl.  Once the contest ends they'll be put on a BYC poll for the kind folk of BYC to vote for a winner.

Prize: A copy of Gail Damerow's Chicken Health Handbook, which he/she will surely appreciate being such a witty chicken-fancier.

9. ChooksChick  smileyFlapper Contest  smiley

Post a picture of your fowl flapping in action!

10. Thebirdguy's  [image]  Cutest Baby Picture Contest - Week Two Contest

Thanks for adding more icons for me, Kathy! Great idea to post that in other threads.

I just had to bring my New Years chicks back inside - they've been out there almost a week. Sadly, the speckled sussex were ready to rock and roll (one of them was outside running around on the crusty snow) but the showgirls are entirely too tiny. My rooster also tried to kill a SS yesterday, and my "mean girl" just pecked at everyone like she always does - she's a nightmare. I removed the offenders this morning and then let the kids out. There was some moderate pecking (they've been in a cage in the coop since Wednesday I think to acclimate) like you'd expect, and they did fine. Unfortunately the showgirls are still pretty much chick-sized and too meek to run away. They also can fit in the holes in the fence and get out. That, combined with the hawk circling yesterday made me bring them back inside. Maybe another few weeks til the showgirls get big enough? I bet they're enjoying the move back to the house, though, I have the basement wood stove on and it's about 80 degrees down there.

These are the pictures of the 60 Silver Gray Dorkning eggs I set yesterday. The first picture is of the new sytle Genesis 1588. There is a new control center that has temp and humidity displayed, along with the set temperature. Set temp can be changed from this display. You hold the up or down arrow for 5 seconds and the set temp goes up or down by tenth degrees.

First tip: remove the plug

Second tip: keep humidity above 20% but less than 30%. The new Genisis has better control of this with a smaller deep water holder in the bottom.

Third tip: Use a Water Weasel

Water Weasel with two probes

Weasel in egg tray.jpg

Temp on one is 99.1 The second one is 98.8. Humidity is not accurate because the probe is in the weasel(Nursery Rhyme.

I will try out other tips later.
