notafarm, thank you for the hint!  I will do this next time.

Laree, I totally understand name mispronounciation.  I love my full name, Deirdre, but you can imagine the pronounciations I got.  It is pronounced Deerdra but I have heard mostly the wrong pronounciation.  My all time hated mispronounciation was Dredra.  I hated the first week of school every year waiting for the teacher to either get it right or go by my nick name DiDi.  DH took to telling telemarketers that if they could pronounce my name right, they could talk to me.  It was pretty funny because they would try again at least once.  This kept up until one evening at dinner time, he answers the phone, tells them they can talk to me if they get my name right, nope wrong, he hangs up.  The next day I had a doctor's appointment and the receptionist asked me how to pronounce my name.  It had been her the evening before confirming my appointment. lau.gif

ETA - we won't even start on my maiden name.  It was Sturtevant and "slaughtered" is a nice way of putting what they always did to it.wink.png

They know my sense of humor and that it was not at all a real threat, but they also got that they needed- at that point- to restrain themselves, because Mama was DONE. Now they're 14 and 16 and I just walk away and turn off their texting. That works really fast!! My current method of 'calm bedtime' is to point out that they are at this point being given the opportunity to go to bed as I expect, prior to my coming unglued. The consequence of my coming unglued is that their bedroom doors come off and go in the garage. "Now, weigh your choices carefully."

Thank You!!!!  Now I won't feel bad rehoming the roo.  But what conditions make the hens more likely to lay boy eggs??  Seems like I accidently discovered it. sigh.

now to read the other 100 posts...

I read sometime ago, so I don't remember the source or how reliable this is, that incubation temps influence the % males: % females. Females are favored with a slightly higher temperature. At ideal temps the males are usually 50-55% of the hatch anyway.

Edited for clarification:  High temps seem to kill off the males, so the % hatch is lowered. I DID NOT mean to infer that temperature decides the gender, it does not. I Gender is already decided at insemination. ANd not during incubation

Not true. The sex of the chick is influenced by the hen laying the egg. Chickens are not like mammals.

NOW: temperature fluctuations could cause differences in the # of each gender to SURVIVE hatching/incubation. Males tend to be stronger and larger, and thus have slightly more resources available to retain body heat during changes in ambient temperature.
