Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long! - Page 587

I used to smirk a little bit while I was reading all the worried posts about incubator temps, thinking "I won't do that", because I have read all of the answers to the posts saying "calm down, relax, it will be fine"

I have been humbled!

This is my first hatch, and I am frantic!  I check the temps on the bator at least 5 times a day (not opening up, just peeking through the window) and then having to resist the urge to come and ask if they will be okay. The next 20 days are going to drive me insane!

Only two of twelve eggs due to hatch tonight went to lock down,  and they are not doing anything yet. hmm.png

It's been so hot here in IL that I've already had to mow the grass.  Today it hit the 80s again,  so I planted sweet corn;  I have no idea if it will grow because it's nearly a month earlier than I've ever planted it before. [The earliest sweet corn I ever planted was on April Fools Day; it grew but was set back by cool weather,  and the corn planted three weeks later made ears as quick and bigger.]

Corn is a heat loving plant. Sorry. THat's why it waits and under performs.  You might try peas!

I'm glad I set a full incubator for this hatch... my valentines day chicks are almost 5 weeks old and it looks like out of 21 chicks I only have 6 boys.

That's about normal for me. I don't have any idea what I do that causes a flux of girls, especially when I want boys... idunno.gif

I'm hoping that there's still a few closet boys in there, most of them are EEs so it's somewhat hard to tell.

You are in the right place then!

We are here to  help--you are in capable hands. THere are many well seasoned hatchers here--and I'm not one of them unless 4 settings count.

Temp in the bator now is 96.0.  hasn't been above 97.6 in over 13 hours.

All I can do now is sit back and watch the inevitable.

At least I'l have a few in the Brinsea hatch... I'll be moving the sulmtalers to be stacked in the Brinsea.

Sad because from Thursday until about 6PM last night, the bator stayed around 99.5 except for a couple of hours after I added the eggs.

Keeper of 26 hens,  4 PW Leghorns, 1 leghorn mix, 1 FBCMarans, 1 Australorp, 1 Buff Orpington, 2 Mama Olive Eggers w/ 15 chicks each, 1 EE, a Barred Rock, a RIR, a CQ, 1 Delaware, 1 Black Star, a Splash Ameraucana, 3 W/BW Ameraucana pullets, 5 polish, 2 Welsummers and 41 juvies of various breeds. YIKES!  Time to SELL some chickens!
