 I'm sure they didn't, they are protected. It is unfortunate when our flocks get on the menu. Chick-among-us, you are superwoman holding that bird! I admire your restraint in not hurting it. Even knowing I shouldn't, I would have been tempted to SSS.

 I'm sorry for your losses. That hawk must of been desperate for food. We have tons of hawks here, but my only loss over the last 3 years was a pullet to a tiny juvenile hawk/falcon. That little hawk was smaller than my pullet, but managed to pin her against a fence when I was gone to town. Good for you not to kill out of anger, hopefully with the rough handling "your" hawk never comes back.

Hi everyone my husband just called me from home and said the temp spiked to 102 not sure how long it was at that temp when we left this morning for work it was at 100 did the eggs just get ruined

I woke up to this morning to a bator full of chicks on the first day of Spring:) To bad it was raining and cold outside

Cornevelders (93+% barnevelder blood with a drop of Dark Cornish)

Looks like I have at least four more pipped eggs that will be zipping soon and a few eggs left to pip. I did loose 3 that pipped on the wrong side (laying flat against the floor of the bator) and looked like the poor things drowned.

The egg carton in the back of the bator has 12 eggs in it due just before Easter weekend for a kindergarten classroom hatch. Don't mind the little one with yellow paint on it's head. I love it's momma and wanted to keep track of her egg:)

I have gone back and forth on whether or not to join the conversation. I REALLY wanted to join the Easter hatch, but knew I couldn't because I had promised my son's preschool I would do a hatch for them at the school. I can't have chicks hatching at a school over the weekend, so I thought I was out.  But, as I got thinking, there will be chicks hatching late, and I'm not doing this for anything other than fun, so why not join in?

So, just today, I set 7 eggs in my Brinsea Mini Advance. It's at my son's preschool, and the obsessive candler in me is *dying* at the lack of control I'll have on this hatch. Sure, everyone's been given strict instructions not to mess with the incubator at all. However, I can't go check the eggs on any old whim. I'm not sure I'll even get the opportunity to candle them at all. Yikes!

Anyway, I set 3 BCM eggs. 3 lavender ameraucana eggs (the moms were separated into breeding pens about 1.5 weeks ago, so dad MAY be LA, but may be something different). 1 egg where mom is a BCM/Lav Am cross, dad unknown.

Honestly if he had been HUNGRY and killed one of my birds and was trying to take his "food" away I would have released him myself...that was not the case.. He was killing defenseless pets needlessly with no thought to EAT it.... he killed (essentially) the maran and moved on to pinkachu killed him and left him lay...didn't try to carry anything away and was maiming and killing without feeding at all. What was the point of this? And as to him harming me....I'm not such a great example to my children after all, as I was so consummed with anger I  didn't care at all what the bird was capable of....I wasnt scared at all...I was ANGRY I think I scared him. Had he hurt me,well I might just be in jail I guess. But I was careless in my anger, I had no concern for my own safety whatsoever.....and I certainly didnt care if he was a bit uncomfortable....especially after we lined up the little bodies to bury...heartbreaking.

 A shame as we are such bird lovers and even though the hawks frequent our pasture they have never before attacked the birds....we are so careful about predators...and I dont free range them unless we are outside with them.... I am all about nature and conservation,but I think protecting my animals is my duty,looking at princess so listless...I think I didnt do a great job

 I hope the rest are ok since there was another maran girl had blood all over herself and now I can tell which one she is and they all seem fine....just worried I won't know until I go out and she's dead

Such a shame, I know he's a predator, but he has to make a living somehow.  It's too bad our birds can make an easy meal.  I'm fortunate in that I'm able to have solid roofs over my runs (flippin expensive).  I see large hawks circling all the time, they nest on the neighbor's property.  We can watch the fledglings with binoculars.  I only free range my birds if I'm sitting there watching them.  I know it's not practical for most people.

Chick-among-us....as horrible as that all is...that picture of you holding it, barehanded and ******...is soooo awesome.  Someday you'll look back and you're going to laugh and be impressed with yourself.  I bet the authorities were a little scared of you.  No one wants to mess with a ****** off chicken lover who's babies were slaughtered....especially when she's ****** enough to catch the hawk barehanded and hold like a really naughty roo!!! 

I'm glad princess is ok and hope she gets better!!!

CHick among us, Sorry for your loss.YOu are and were understandable upset.  You are very brave to hold that hawk. My DH has stories about holding eagles. THe claws are the most dangerous!! You have a solid grip for sure!! RIP brave rooster. My DH worked for years on eagle projects to bring back the population. We do what we can to minimize our livestock losses to the wildlife; we try deterents as much as possible and as much as we enjoy our chickens we also enjoy the wildlife.

My sweet Splenda..we don't even know what she is!!

 

 

So Sorry for what happened to you and your chickens, Splenda is a Beautiful little D'Uccle.

 

I thought she was part Serama as soon as I saw that pic.  They have a very distinctive set to the wing and tail that your little Splenda has but I am far from an expert on either of these breeds.  She is very cute whatever she is!
