And looking at the hatching calender, if you count Backwards from April 7th (counting that as day 21), then day 1 would be Sunday March 18th - not that I am that great at math.  I can count to 21 though (all my fingers and toes plus one, right?)

Home of the world's cutest dachshund, one crazy blue heeler, two cats,
one fat pony, and many (but not too many!) chickens

Can anyone tell me, how many are too many chickens?

Good morning all!  I was able to sleep past 5am this morning and it felt soooooo good.  Have spent the last couple of hours catching up.  Had to inturrupt my reading to let the horses out.  The three year old was trying to beat down the barn.  Apparently I was not getting out there fast enough to give them breakfast.  When I went out the chickens thought they were going out too.  Nope not yet.  Not light enough.  I have lost some to coyotes if I let them out before it is bright enough.  I know they could get snatched even during the day, but it seems to happen only when it is not light enough.  Kathy and Laree your egg art is amazing bow.gif

Updated cliff notes:

Bucka here are your cliff notes through this afternoon:

Cliff notes version for those who can't keep up.

Yeah all my fingers, toes, and tail is how I add it up. LOL

When you set eggs, always mark down the time when set (day 0)  then at exactly 24hrs later is day 1 and count from there 21 days and that's the supposedly hatch day for chicks if everything goes as planned.  March 18 (Sunday) this year to April 8 ( Easter Sunday) is 21 days or 3 weeks, exactly. wink.png

Jeff

There's a whole world of differences between propagators and breeders. My goal is to propagate breeders towards the Standard of Perfection.

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, you can make a purse out of it, but it won't be silk. LOL

Maybe in about another 30-40 years I'll get this "being an expert" thing figured out by then. LOL

Ooh, that should be interesting. Get ready to be a Dove mama and hand feed them, I don't think they pop ready to go like chicks do. Got any pictures?

So you have the temp at the temp you bator suggests..and just let them sit for a few days, then transfer some?  I'm thinking that a few days with no turning makes sense to me.  Even having the temp a little lower than the 99.5 for the air, and lower than the 101 for the still.  Like I said, will be waiting for results!

I think it did work! Last night I pulled off the top layer and moved them into the other 1588. I pulled 4 clear Iowa Blues, 3 from one hen who obviously does NOT appreciate a gentleman rooster roll.png  ALL 24 of NotAFarm's Icelandics are developing ya.gifThat leaves me with 70 in bator #2 to hand turn.

I didn't pull any of the shipped eggs remaining in bator #1, but out of Kathyinmo's 22 Icelandics eggs set, 15 have completely recovered their air cells! The other 7 have nothing going on or hints of a blood ring. The box these came in was dented with two eggs broken so I know they were abused on the trip here. It's a little too early to tell much on the Wellies and BCMs but they look promising big_smile.png  These are still in egg cartons so this morning I set up one side of the bator about 2 1/2 inches and will turn them in this fashion.

Well I candled this morning.

My shipped eggs aren't doing well at all.  :(  Ordered 42 silkie eggs and set 34 because there were some broken ones.  After I candled today there were two more cracked and one of the cracked ones was clear and then I dropped it on my toe!  Yuck!  So now i have 33 set and one that is cracked.  Of the 33 that are still in there only 5 have for sure development in them.  I can see the veins and they look good.  I have several clears, one that has a bubble in it that moves when I move the egg - ruptured air cell?  and then I have several that I am not sure about because they arent clear and they do have maybe one big vein in there?  I tried to get pics but my camera wasn't cooperating.

I also have in there my hens eggs and OMG they are developing.  Which means they will be Chicken/Guinea cross!  I didnt think my guineas were breeding them.  Plus I have my father in law's blue bantam cochin eggs in there too.  Total I still have 42 eggs in the turner 7 blue cochin, 2 chicken/guinea, and 33 silkie eggs.

My duck eggs are muscovies and will hatch a couple weeks after the chicks so I didnt include them in the easter hatch but I am so excited I hahve to tell yall what they are doing.  I don't have a turner in there and I am turning them by hand but..... they are developing!  I know day 5 is a little early to candle muscovy ducks because they take 35 days but i had to take a peek and I can see the spider..  That's what I call it anyways, the red dot with a few veins coming off of it.  Yay!wee.gif

Bantam Red Cochins, Mille Fluer D'Uccle, Free ranging guineas - Pearl, Pied, Buff, Violet, Lavender.  One RIR hen and one Black Australorp hen (Henny) who is a spoiled rotten pet.  Variety of Maran babies.  One great husband, three kids, and two dogs.  I'm a chick-a-holic so I have an ever changing number of feather kids.
