Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long! - Page 771

I am all caught up!  Taking a day off the computer put me almost 400 posts behind!

I feel like a kid that has neglected to do her homework for the better part of a semester and trying to catch up.  It was a little discouraging and I almost skipped to the end, but I made it through.

You all need to quit posting Emu pics!  If I bring home any more animals I think he might leave me!  barnie.gif And those birds are SO COOL!

I candled all of the eggs last night.  I have 15 Silkies set and12 Australorps, of those there are 8 silkies and 7 australorps developing.  There were a few quiters, some blood rings and several clears (all of the white silkie eggs were clear sad.png) So I have 17 eggs doing great out of 27, but I only ordered 16 eggs so I am pretty happy!

I don't want you to become single! I am just trying to convince Linda (gryeyes) that she NEEDS a pair of emus.   smileyvault-cute-big-smiley-animated-060.gif

I clarified with him and he thinks it's best if you PM him so none get lost. You know, cause this thread's moving FAST.

Don't give up. Candle them tomorrow.

I've had many hours of outages, cold eggs, etc and had a fine hatch. Keep them in there.

Doesn't everyone NEED a pair of emus? I have a whole yard that needs raking. I've contemplated adopting a 12 year old boy but emus are way cuter.

So is care of a new baby emu the same as a chick? heat lamps, chick feed, etc? or is it game bird feed? Wonder if they'd fit under an ecoglow.. LOL. No, I'm not hatching one.. at least not yet!

I may have a broody now - if she sticks with it maybe I'll have some late hatchers in the game. :P

I know I said I was going to sit around all day and FINALLY get caught up but that didn't happen. you see, it's Springtime, and all of you are planting and tilling and me, well, I'm STILL shoveling.

Here are my *ahem* Helpers (who really would be more help if they would grow some thumbs)

Spring 1.jpg

You see, its bright, sunny and rather warm, but the silly snow just reflects the sun without warming up and melting argh.gif

Last fall I was getting ready to hang the fencing for the runs and something came up, and the fence didn't get done, and it snowed, effectively cementing the fence to the ground for the whole winter. Now that winter is over so I decided to start digging it out.   It was hard to hold the tape and take a picture so it's not in focus, but that snow is 16" deep th.gif

Spring 2.jpg

Fortunately, we live in negative humidity (ok, not quite but the relative humidity outside is about 12%) so the snow is kinda dehydrated and really light and granular. It's like shoveling sand or something, it's just all these little beads of ice that sift and settle like  - sand.

Spring 3.jpg

The goal is to get the sun to the ice below the snow, and hopefully soften the ice up enough to get the fence unstuck. I will also have to shovel a path along the fence posts so that I can expose that ice to sunshine too. Once it melts out of the way I can hang the fence, cover the runs and FINALLY start using the beautiful pop doors that are all set on timers just waiting for me to flip the switch.

AK Michelle, your snow pictures makes me feel bad about complaining today about the "cold" weather we're having here in Northern CA. hide.gif

Although I did candle my "Easter Eggs" for my son's kindergarten classroom hatch and 12/12 are developing and that does seem a bit more like spring!

Well, it was fun while it lasted. Going from ebay, to amazon, to etsy and back again. *sigh* Never did get anything off etsy. Ebay and amazon on the other hand? Oh boy. Good thing is I resisted buying any eggs I couldn't do anything with. I got a necklace and 2 books from a series I'm trying to get all the books for. I have one more book to go and it'll all be good. It's a good thing I'm not trying to keep up with Warriors anymore. I'm waaaaay behind on it. At least I can still get a cow tail.... not that I need one. hide.gif

Chickens: 4 RIR, 1 HRIR roo, 1 BA hen, 13 AGF, 2 BA/RIR. Ducks: 1 Mallard drake and 4 little Coturnix quail. Everything else: 6 dogs, 6 cats, a pot bellied pig and one stubborn Mustang that rules the field!

Living happily with Blu and our son on the way.

I finally opened the bator and candled today. Out of 30 shipped eggs I pulled 5 clears. Thank you to my awesome swap partners!
