Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long! - Page 963

Second chick out and I really think this one is a lav AM.  It was in a rush.  It zipped in about 15 minutes after being only a pip all day. wee.gif

The ecoglow 50 supposedly will do for 50 chicks, although I haven't tried that many. :) the smaller 20 is for 20 chicks. :) I've had up to 18 using that one. I have both and love them.  No heat lamp needed and no it won't burn the chicks. You can put your hand right on it.

Is this the Eco 20??

I'll be adding a layer of wood to my FarmGirl NQB8R (I made it) to have a better heat ballast in its body for the next go-round. Fortunately I'll have enough space in other incubators for the turkeys and geese I'm setting Sunday.

I know the cool nights where I couldn't bear to turn the heat back on slowed these eggs down, because all 4 incubators have peeps but not a single pip. Oh, well!

I talked with Yashar today, and he's got an old Sears incubator from the 50s that is several inches thick in all of the walls. I'm totally going to mimic that! I'll put 2 layers of 1x6s on mine to finish it out, because I started w/ 7/8" plywood and insulated internally with foam board, foil and reflective tape. I'd like to be able to retain heat MUCH better, but I'll have to reset all of the heating elements after that, too...it'll slow me down a little bit, but NOTHING can stop me from hatching!!!! Muwhahahahahahaaa!!!!!!!....um, I mean, that's okay.

I've given in to starting the wood stove on a couple nights, just for the LG!! Of course, DH just starts it for himself!  lol.png

31 chicks out.  2 pipped.  I think the final 3 unpipped are quitters.

AMAZINGLY, with shipped eggs, if one of the pipped ones makes it, I will end up hatching 15 of 16 Icelandics from the other Mary/NotAFarm.  Isn't that TOTALLY unbelievable?  Best Icelandic Hatch I've ever had!!

Finalists for "How many chicks will Mahonri Hatch?"

This could be a close one!!!

Egghead_Jr   33, Ice, bantam cochin, sumatra
featherz         32, ice, ice, bantam cochin
Chookchick    32, DL, Ice, Ice
KVMommy     32, sumatra, sulmtaler, sumatra

If I end up with only 32, we'll end up having to do a coin toss!... both featherz and Renee guessed 32 and had Icelandic as one of the first three out.

HOPEFULLY... 33 will make it... if none of the other unpipped ones pipped... then I have to look for who guessed 34!

No, that's a 50. It's MUCH bigger than it looks. That cage is like four feet long. :) The 20 is pretty tiny but it does the job. :)

Yah all of those were clears for me. Bummer! =( Maybe they were just more sensitive to shipping?
