Hen has growth blocking nostrils (?)-PICS POSTED-MORE pics #15 and #16

Hi all,

I had this same issue that I just noticed 2 nights ago. Last night I was reading on what I should do and came across a thread with a link thy suggested using hydrogen peroxide to loosen the impacted piece. So last night, I used a q tip and cotton balls to ‘soak’ the impacted nostril by simply holding it over the impacted area. The hydrogen peroxide didn’t seam to foam, but I continued to hold it anyway being careful not to get it in my hens eye. I then did it again tonight, for again about 5 mins. I then took a wooden bbq skewer and tried to pry the ‘kernel’ lightly around the edge of the nostril. As I noticed movement, I continued to attempt to wiggle it, then the hard ‘kernel ’ popped out. I followed up with dabbing the now gaping nostril with the hydrogen peroxide as well as I could, and covered the and surrounding areas with terramycin. I read that the nostril should shrink back down in a few days. I’ll continue to use the terramycin for a few more days and hopefully that will be the trick!

Gardengeek, that was a good job. Peroxide can lose it's fizz if it gets old (I had this experience recently.) The hen's eye area looks swollen. Is it that way on the other side? A swollen eyelid or face can be a sign of a sinus infection or respiratory disease.

Thanks for this info. I didn’t notice it being swollen, but I’ll take a closer look in the morning. The peroxide that I used was a brand new bottle. If her eye is swollen, what do you suggest further action should be? She is acting normal. I couldn’t tell if something in particular caused the impaction.

I would look at both eyes, look for any discharge or bubbles in the eye, nasal drainage or sneezing which can be symptoms of a respiratory sinus infection. Hopefully it is not a respiratory problem.

My 4 year old JG has been gasping alot lately. She's good weight, no worms, no bugs, no cold or snot. Just some chalky looking stuff, seems like you can scrape it. I tried to pick at it, I had her in a towel on my lap, but then her comb and hackles start to get dusky. I just don't know what this is, and if I should be digging around in her nose. Any ideas?

Hi, My chicken looks the same, did you find a solution that worked?

Thank you !

I have been there for a year of suggestions and not thinking any one is right. You can ask Dawg53 (the worm guy). And they were all right especially Dawg53 and Casportpony, who really hit the nail on the head. Feed. Moisten it for a few days and flick it out with a tooth pick or needle (I didn't say that) but get that clog out of there. You can ask those 2 people I've mentioned for their opinion as well . Or probably a lot of others. But I only post what I know.
