My 4 year old JG has been gasping alot lately. She's good weight, no worms, no bugs, no cold or snot. Just some chalky looking stuff, seems like you can scrape it. I tried to pick at it, I had her in a towel on my lap, but then her comb and hackles start to get dusky. I just don't know what this is, and if I should be digging around in her nose. Any ideas?

This is only a guess, but if it isn't an object that got stuck in there, then could it be a fungus like aspergillosis? The root-like lines are what have me thinking about a fungus, but it could be just some 'stuff' filling in scratches on her beak. Another possibility is that she has discharge from some other cause, and it's crusting up.

The closest I can come is it's like Brown Hypertrophy in Parakeets., which is some kind of buildup that's keratinized, and can occlude the nostrils. I haven't heard of that in chickens, tho. Fungus would be another possibility.

Of course mites is possible, but from pics on the internet, it doesn't look like it. But I think I will treat with a worming , ivomec eprinex, and some vaseline on the nostrils, and try to remove it.

She has done the beak breathing for 2 years, on and off, more in the summer. But it's alot worse now. She can't run, she can't run away from me. She hasnt' lost weight.

Anyone heard of Brown or Brown's Hypertrophy?
