Chickens and snow

Well, I let mine out every day, above zero or not. They figure out how cold it is quickly. Some brave the weather, some head back into the coop. However, maybe you need to reinforce your coop a bit. They should always have a place that is protected from the cold wind and the wet. Chickens and wet don't mix. Many chicken owners swear they don't need extra heat. (If it's below about 10 degrees, ok 20 degrees, I turn on the heat lamp - I hate being cold, personally :) )

Get some heavy plastic to keep the snow and wet out of the coop. You still need ventilation - there's tons of information on BYC about ventilation.

Good luck!

Thankyou for your reply and support. My hubby does not like to place a tarp around the coop, last time he removed it and said, "They are Chickens they be all right". It was snowing like crazy that day. Out Chicken tractor has an upstairs where the nesting boxes are, so they go downstairs to eat and upstairs to keep warm. At the moment they are outside enjoying a reprieve form the snow weather. However, its funny to see them avoid snow patches they do not like to walk in the snow. I have taken advantage of the weather and really gave their coop an extra cleaning.
