She sure fooled me! A freeloader for almost 44 weeks FINALLY lays an egg.

I have two Welsummer pullets (not much longer until they're hens!) and one of them was acting strangely loud and irritable this morning. When I went to check for eggs, she was in a box so I left her alone. Shortly after, there was a very loud and lengthy egg song so I went and looked and sure enough, she'd laid her egg. Only it didn't look like the all of the other Wellie eggs I've been getting. The others have all been dark w/lots of speckles -- this one was dark but completely devoid of speckles. It's almost the same size (57 grams) but a different shape. And then it hit me.... she was acting weird because it's her first egg. For crying out loud, she was hatched April 2nd! This also means that the other girl has been laying all of the Wellie eggs. I thought they were taking turns and both were pretty much every other day layers over the winter but now I know it was all the one girl. In hindsight, that does explain how they never happened to lay on the same day.
 
I have 2 RIR pullets that are now 10 months old that have just begun laying in the last 2 weeks. I had given up on them.
 
I hatched wellies last year on 3/9 - still have yet to get an egg out of one of them. She looked ready in the fall, but then went into molt. They'd better start up soon, I have a waiting list for hatching eggs!
 
My wellies took nearly 10 months too! They had their first molt this winter and now their eggs are HUGE and very dark/speckled so I finally forgave them for freeloading for so long.
 
Well, I was wrong about it being her first egg -- it was her second (one of the kids found one in the run shortly after I posted and it was definitely hers). Still...

I'm glad she figured out the nest box thing. I know she hasn't been laying in the run other than the one because I just put fresh leaves in and it would have been obvious before I did that.
 
Oh no! Hope I don't have to wait this long. I have a banty Welsummer who is 28 weeks old! She needs to start paying rent! :) Are welsummers typically late bloomers?
 
Wellies are sloooooow. And they're poor winter layers to boot.

But it's all worth it if you get nice dark eggs :) I keep a couple real monsters to fill the cartons (Sex links, Wyandottes, Rocks), and the Wellies and the EE are for cool eggs.
