Call me weird but I actually keep one of my silkies indoors. She was attacked by two brahmas when she was 2 months, cracked her head open and almost lost her. Ever since she has been living inside. I have tried to gradually introduce her to the flock again and have had 0 success. The Brahmas are gone, it's all silkies and as much as they are friendly towards her, she gets scared whey they peck at her. I tried introducing her at night and she started making loud sounds, woke the neighbords, so once I brought her in, she was happy. When it comes to my pets I treat all the same, I pick my dog's poop everyday so it's the same for the silkie. I clean her area in the morning before giving her fresh water and food and I clean it again right before putting her to bed, and if there is a stinky one during the day, I clean it up right away.. She loves spending time on my lap rather than on her area , when she sees me in the computer, she calls me and goes on until I pick her up and sit her next to me. Next to my outdoor silkies, she acts like an indoor pet. Dust, well I did notice dust but being a clean freak, I dust once a day usually. Before I got my furniture I slept on the floor and she slept next to me. Not a single move or noise all through the night. Helping me do my laundry Doing her favorite thing... As far as pooping all over the place, rarely happens, somehow she has learned to only do it in her area, and she only does it in one corner, not all over the place.

I just wanted to add that using stall bedding pine pellets is far more useful for keeping them in the house than shavings. Inside, shavings stink like they're ready to be changed in about a day with just one chicken. The pellets last much longer. People use them for cat litter as well. Imagine pine shaving in a cat litter box.

Glass panes, coated aluminum framing, concrete floor, piped water fm house, electricity. Half for my plants, outer half for the chickens with exit door to outside. Heated to 45 to 55 degree. Would have to determine what to do when sun heats to more than mid 70's. Their side has two gable mounted fans that exhaust air drawn from automatic shuttered window or manually opened small awning windows. Obviously would need to clean their half how frequently? Would litter be necessary. Perhaps grow grass flats and rotate into the chicken half. Thoughts??
