Help....1st year with chickens..... 1st eggs hatching under a broody..... Saturday was the day...

So my broody Rosy only has only 7 days left on the eggs ........

I figured with the lip on the nesting box, I would need food and water in there for the little peepers.

I wanted to set this up before the hatch so Rosy could get used to it.

AM I DOING THE RIGHT THING?

Thanks

Tricia

looks fine but I would make a little ramp for the chicks to get in/out as the hen will try to lead them out

Wooo Hoooo 3 more days and I get (well more like Rosy the Boody hen gets) chickies.

I am sooo excited.

I have ramps to build Friday night and I am sure I will be fussing in the garage and coop till all hours chick proofing; for safety.

I'll follow with Photos.

Wish me and my new mama luck!

Your Rosy, looks just like my Cochin (Buttercup).  Buttercup has been sitting on one egg since Sunday morning.

Best of luck with your hatching.  =D

Today is the day!!

We got a couple of inches of blowing drifting snow last night.

I went out to the coop and sure enough, a dusting of snow everywere.

I raked and sorted and finally looked in the nest box.

Boy is Rosy cranky.

She bit me when I reached in to give more food and change the water.

I take this as a good sign.

I'll check in with her later...... just can't wait!

Rosy thinks I am stalking her and gives me the stink eye now.

No little cheeps from the box.

Could I be off a couple of days?

I set the eggs under her 3 weeks ago to the day on the Saturday at about noon.

I candled at 8 days and had a spot and veins

I havn't candled since and try not to distrub Rosy too much.

Any thoughts?

I was shocked, just recently, that my broody hen hatched several days late. It wasn't even freezing cold here either.

Be patient, and good luck!

I am not a patient person.

I just got back in from checking on her...... no peeps.

She is never going to go broody again with the crazy food lady bugging her all the time on the nest!rant.gif

This is killing me.... I think it will be worse with the incubator, (freshly ordered and looking forward to it)

The rest are thinking I am bringing treats and are so disappointed in me today, because I'm not.

Ok so Saturday was the day (day 21 ).,.... and our wonderful SW ontario weather turned seriously winter on Thursday(day 19)

Chicks were supposed to hatch under Rosy yesterday. no chicks. it is sunday and almost 3pm and still no chicks.

The water I did put in with her in the coop keeps freezing.

Should I move her into the booder (no lamp) in the heated garage with a box for the nest box?
