Three arguments for the pet value of chickens.

*Feathered Valium. Stress busters weather they are in your lap or in your yard, They calm the soul just to watch them.

*Companionship.  Fluffy lap warmers who won't tell you you're putting on weight.

*Relatively low maintenance compared to a dog. (You don't need to have them spayed.)

I do not have free range hens, or I am sure that I could come up with some more.

I do enjoy the time I sit in their run with them. Birds are very intelligent animals in spite of the'dumb cluck' title. They are animals of their programing, but a bird that bonds can be so much more.

Maybe you can pick pets that are common to most people, then do a compare and contrast to say, a cat, a dog, a chicken.

I Have not been able to go chicken sit lately. I will spend some time in the run this weekend and make notes.

Maybe you could make a thread called: 'I like my chicken better than cats because...'

And another, "I like my chicken better than dogs because..."

Or, I like my chickens better than people because... (They taste better,) ACK! Just kidding!!!  I got carried away and forgot my audience.  big_smile.png

Nifty, your trifold is super duper way more important than "the joys of having a pet chicken"..  I was thinking way more informal.  For people and friends who have no idea why  anyone would want a pet chicken, "all they do is scratch and lay eggs"  "It's only a chicken"  Something to have people say "Gosh I never realized that chickens did that" and have a chuckle after reading it--that may lead to people asking how to keep chickens, info like in your trifold.

I wonder, am I one of a small percentage that considers my chickens pets?  Out of 100,000 members, how does it break down to keeping them for meat, keeping them for eggs, or eggs and meat, or keeping them for pets and eggs?

So how important is it to show people it's not just a chicken?  Maybe it's not?  I'm curious.  I tend live with blinders on, LOL

We actually did a poll to ask why people raise chickens:

http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/232357/official-byc-poll-why-do-you-have-chickens-select-all-that-apply

I was suggesting a tri-fold because you can cram in a lot of great info including the reasons why people raise chickens and that a large majority of the hundreds of thousands of people raising chickens are doing so because they love them as pets.  (pets that make breakfast).

But aren't you targeting new people? I would have thought an A4 would be ideal for them so they can stick it on their fridge - tri-fold is good too but perhaps for more interested people or current new owners? If we want more people to appreciate them then they need to be seen less as 'stock' and more as personalities - maybe the wording could be along the lines of... "did you know..' and then something cool about a chicken to express their ways.... Like... did you know, when you come home, chickens will recognise the sound of your car and come running to greet you with their little wings out (well, mine do!) I wouldn't personally pitch them against dogs and cats though. Just have them as them and why they are so fun, sweet, cool and amusing - not to mention good for eating veggie and salad scraps! When I tell people that that movie Chicken Run (is that what it was called? The cartoon one?) was so true to life they look at me like I am mad!

I am happy you became a member!!!  Perfect direction!!!  Love what you're saying.  "Did you know" is good, probably better than "why........a pet", etc.  Someone else at work said something, too, but I can't remember,  but it was good!

Good idea.  And I , too, would not compare them to cats or dogs, it would probably work against us.

What's an A4?

So we need a catchy attention grabbing title, then after that, "Did you know"

... did you know, when you come home, chickens will recognise the sound of your car and come running to greet you with their little wings out ?

A rooster warms up the nest for inexperienced egg layers?

If anyone has a "Did you know" please post it, and I'll move them all to page 1.  Then at some point, we can vote on which ones to use.  Yes?

Ideas for an attention grabbing title-please post and I will make a list of them too.

lol- I didn't know that about a Rooster - thats sweet! Roosters, at least, in the city, are given a bad rap as some violent creature who will attack you as much as look at you! (i know thats not true as I have had two girls who turned out to be boys and a 'walk past' no one would claim)

An A4 is a normal sheet of paper - thats the size they call it...

oh! something else I am always being asked is how different are the eggs from my girls - people seem to be fascinated with the colour of the yolk and the thickness of the shells...

How about for a heading ' how to have a clucking good time' :)
