looking for opinions on breeds

Han
I am looking to add to my flock of 21 hens.   I live in northern Maine and the climate is cold so it has to be a hearty breed.  I sell my eggs so good egg producer is also a must.  Any thoughts on what breed I should look into??

Hands down I'd get Golden Comets. They're cold hardy, extremely friendly and affectionate, docile, and they can't be beat for brown egg production. I love mine.

Golden Comets are good layers. The start laying early as well. My daughter has them. I am in Central Maine so know what your facing for cold there. I love the Australorpes. They are very reliable winter layers. The peas comb breeds are good- Ameraucana, and EES are good but they sometimes start laying late and not always reliable winter layers. My EEs did well over winter and I layed as well as any of my breeds once they got going. I had eggs all winter. I love the colored eggs and my egg customers do as well. Ameraucanas are similiar and lay blue. They don't start up though for a good six months sometimes which is much later than golden comets would. I might stay away from bigger combs since I know it get quite a bit below zero up where you are often. Unless you plan to heat your coop in winter.

I live in central Labrador here is how I keep ours(100 in a 10 x 16 house) from freezing; well insulated henhouse, electric heat on a floor level thermostat and a fan at ceiling height to blow the warm air down. The electric heater hardly ever comes on and we leave the door open about an hour when they can't get out in the winter.
One breed.................White Leghorn. We have some brown ex-link but the Leggies outlay them and are smaller so eat less feed. LEGHORNS

my daughter loves the look of the Australorps, do you know if they are friendly birds?
I love mine! Was supposed to be black jersey giant, but shes not. Talks to me all the time, I really think she's comlaining by the look of her eyes,it was really cold here. But she's doing really well. Couldn't ask for a better hen.
