Can chickens eat coffee grounds?

Thread Starter

I recently heard about somebody using coffee chaff (from a roasting facility) for use as bedding and soil amendment. They have coffee grounds available too.

So, can chickens eat coffee grounds?

They can eat (apparently tannin-laced) acorns, so why not? Anybody try this?

EDIT: And would they eat the grounds? Would they get hooked on morning coffee if they did???

Coffee grounds are great in compost or in worm beds. But it's not good for chickens.

Here's a previous thread on the subject:

Mine have never showed an interest in them when they had access to the compost pile. They'd scratch through them, but not eat any.

Came looking specifically to find the answer to that question. We get coffee grounds from various coffee shops and spread it across our lawn to deter gophers but they have really begun tearing up the chicken yard and I hate to keep stuffing poison deep down holes and trying to keep it covered well enough to keep the chickens out. No accidents in the 3 years I have been doing it but I just don't like poison, so I wanted to sprinkle coffee grounds. I see in many general conversations on-line (I put: chickens "coffee grounds" in Google search) people say they actually feed them to their chickens and they love them. Hoping this thread gets a little more activity so I can get a more expert opinion!

I'm a single parent of a special needs teen. We live next door to my elderly parents and help them with the farm. We have 2 Labradors, several pet pigs and Bantam chickens. Together we raise Nubian goats, all sorts of chickens, 2 guard Llamas and a guard Emu and Sebastopol geese. We sell our extra garden produce, eggs, goats milk, Llama poo fertilizer, nursery stock, chicks &/or fertilized eggs!

I would not suggest it. The caffeine is not good for them.
