$40 Brooder - - Page 2

They are cute! (And probably tasty, too. =d) 

My brooder was virtually free. 

The box was left behind by the previous owner of our house, the bedding under the sheet came from our ba-gillion oak trees outside, the sheet... I'm not really sure how long we've had that sheet... The lamp we've had for years. Pretty much the only thing we paid for in here is the DE in the sandbath...

Looks good! Cornish X do not need roosts. They grow so rapidly that they are more likely to have feet problems if they are jumping down from a roost. Their bodies grow faster than their legs. I need to fill up my freezer again soon.... I might be putting in a order for Cornish X sometime soon.

When we raise meat birds we order 100 from central hatchery and we sell 50 locally for 1.50. A friend of mine takes 25 to raise and I raise 25. We pay $80 for the 100 chicks + like $12 for shipping. After we sell a few locally we cover the shipping cost and a little more. I start out with 25 and ill end up with about 20-23 after losses. They are really easy to raise. I had 2 30lb round feeders hung from the ceiling and I only filled it up with what they would eat in 12 hours or so. I had 1 5 gallon waterer in there to start and I ended up with 2 due to the extreme heat we had last summer. We fed them 28% game bird starter for 1-2 weeks and them 18-20% game bird grower or nonmedicated chick starter (which ever is cheaper). Then we grew them for a total of 8-10 weeks depending on size. They usually dress out about between 4.5-7lbs if I remember right.
