I'm getting abuse from my contractor. I am learing. - Page 2

Wren house wrap is a type of vapor barrier. It is used over OBS board to keep moisture out. The same as the plastic is put between the sheet rock and insulation to keep moisture from forming between them and causing mold growth and rotting the wood,

get rid of this contractor. He sounds like a jerk.

I have had many contractors laugh in my face over questions I asked, I don't care it is my house and I want to know. You are the one paying and have to live in the house: pick out extacly what you want. If when it came to fixtures and I was told Brass or silver I would say good bye.

Your contractor sounds controlling and a poor businessman.  It's your house, you get to decide the type and quality of fixtures, details, etc.  His job is only to let you know if something can or can't be done and how much it will cost per your specifications.  If something is aganst code, he has to let you know and he can refuse to do it, but a good contractor will listen to your ideas and find a way to create something that makes you happy, that fits your desires. My dad is a contractor, and a home builder and designer, he specializes in multi-million dollar homes and estates, but has done jobs of all shapes, sizes and remodels.  He would never mock or insult a client.  He would never argue with them in a belligerent way, and especially not over a choice that is thiers to make.  You should probably fire this guy if you can.  You could let him finish the final project if its almost done, but if you can get rid of him, that would be best.  Find a guy with a good attitude that listens to you. 

I fired a contractor at my parents home simply because he

failed to control his language.  Nothing about his work. He simply

would not control his mouth.

It's good to know that there are good contractors out there. We are planning an addition to the house a few years from now and he wants to do it but there is no way. How do I find a good one? I tried word of mouth.

    Good contracts makes everyone happy. Your responsibility needs to be spelled out and his needs to be spelled out. If you're picking the hardware then you need to pick it out and have it there when he's ready for it. Somethings like vapor barrier are required in some places and not in others. Don't ever have a contractor that does not want permits and inspections.

   When picking a contractor they must be someone that you can get along with and like and have a good track record ask to see and talk to past customers. Your contract should have pay points (when a part is done the contractor gets a payment) like after the demo and clean up the contractor gets a $ amount but also have in the contract that at that point you can cancel it at that point. That's your protection for him to keep you happy.

You hired this guy to do a job then you must stand aside and let him do the work. If he does the work according to the contract then you got what you paid for and wanted. Remember you hired him to do the work AND for his expertise AND his judgement.  If you wanted to run the show you should have hired a laborer.

All contracts should have a way out for both parties. My contracts say it must be in writing. There are different levels of breeches in a contract and small material breeches are usually not enough to dissolve a contract, negligence is a major breech.

I suspect this contractor is used to installing contractor grade material, and then, charging an arm and leg for a change order. The OP has to look at this stuff, from now until whenever, and has a right to pick whatever fixtures and grade of product she wants. If she's going to provide them, have them on site. If it's left up to the contractor, then establish a proper markup....Some contractors can't think past blow and go. If they can't do it with a nailgun, then they aren't going to do it.
