And No I didn't know it would be such a risk to order this early in the year. I am a chicken NEWBIE. Ive never had chickens before. And these are my first. With my list that I ordered there were only a few available weeks for shipping and I knew the one in late aug would be MUCH too hot... so I took this one.  I hope they will reship. :(

I'm not sure what the question about expanding was about. They wont live in the tree box forever obviously. I have a larger brooder set up in the garage but the cold snap made it far too cold for me to be willing to use right now. They have a BIG set up out in the barn with a big run when they get bigger. I'm also going to sell the ones I don't want and any roos I get other than keeping the phoenix maybe. We are planning on building a chicken house and separate run for the bantams  AND another for the Phoenix boys so their tails wont get damaged... but that's down the road. ;) My husband says that as long as I can do ok with selling eggs and the ones I'm not keeping he will get me the set up that I want. I already have approx 8 people & families who want eggs already *jaw on floor.*  They are also begging me to start raising and selling quail and quail eggs but I told them one step at a time!

Here is thier inside brooder set up. I only use one light btw. I have to use the books to raise and lower the table to adjust the heat because the room is naturally hotter during the day. The lights are held into the tables with the type of hooks that you use to hold heavy paintings on to walls and they are nailed into the table with three nails. The loop is then hooked onto the wall hook and cliped onto the side of the table so its defiantly not going to fall off. I tried pulling it off and it wouldnt budge ;) I love my $5 unfinished yard sale table. It has had a hundred incarnations at this point... lol

Their brooder is a big plastic christmas tree box from wallmart (on clearance sale ... with an additional discount because its missing its lid, handles, and one wheel... org 24 usd... got it for 6)  ;)

AND here is where they will eventually graduate to:

Our barn-- complete with chicken weather dial on top! The entire side of the barn on the left panel (from the white post in the center to the edge will become a new chicken house.... or possibly for quail. Its very large inside. It needs a lot of work but I think it will be great!

This is thier room, its insolated, with wire covering every possible way in on the inside. It goes from the wall on the left side to about 4-5 feet past the window ont he right. and yes.. thats a cat door if I want them to free run...

It has power, water, heat, AND fans.

The inside to the left, the water system is currenty disconnected for winter. (we are going to expand into the horse stall and double the size of the inside area to house the bantams).

from the outside, the run. The door can close as can the window. We will be increasing the size of the run to be the full length of the barn. The posts are made from security fencing and are cemented into the ground. The top is chicken wire and wil be replaced before we put the chickens in because they are old and are getting brittle. The lower sides have three diffrent sizes of wire and are sunk into the ground about a foot and the ground is mounted up by about a foot as well. The tree has been trimmed to take preasure off the top bar of the run and provides great shade in the summer. I will be growing chicken friendly plants all along the out side of the run to grow so that I can give them good treats ;)

We are going to be replacing the chicken wire with heavier gage wire that will last longer and give better protection for them. You can tell that this roof can DEFINATLY carry a heavier wieght wire! This thing is strong enough a full grown man can probibly hang off of it.

Here is the inside.. This is how we bought the house/barn. I will be changing this alot as I really dont like it. Doing the clean out a few weeks back was a nightmare. I do NOT want to reach into these dark holes again.

Woefully inadiquite. This is going to be changed asap. I hate this side... looks very rickety and there are no other roosts currently.

I just got off the phone with the hatchery. They are shipping replacements. Thankfully they allowed me to substitue other things for the bantams. She told me that because its only 15 replacements they will likely ship extras to bring it up to the min amount so they have warmth and that they would probibly end up being either straight run or males. I said that was ok, I will just sell them.

Just a quite little note about Spazzy, Chickzilla, Spitfire, and Derpetto. My hubby was playing with the chicks this morning and he had him help me handle these guys.

Spazzy was sitting on the palm of his hand looking at his wedding band... pecking at it like **OOH SHINY THING!** Hubby got a good laugh about it

Put Spazzy back and held Chickzilla who he loveingly refers to as "Silly Zilly" and she hunkerd down between his hands and took a nap while he rubbed her back... I think someones going to be a pocket pet. ;)

Spitfire... as usual.. didnt want to be held and RAN up the never ending ladder of palms before I put her back in the brooder... then she ran over and pecked a random chick in frustration. Shes tiny.. but hubby agrees... Spitz is the boss. ;)

And lovely little Derpetto. *sigh* oooh the shallow end of the gene pool. Hubby picked her up. She stared off into space for a good 3 mins... then got startled when she realized she was out of the brooder... spun around in a few circles on his palm... and looked up at him... WAAAY up... and proceded to fall over backwards and kick her feet in the air like she was running away doing the backstroke.  I wish I had I my video cam on her! it was classic. Hubby put her down and she stood there screaming for a good min. Some birds are just a bit more 'special' than others I think. lol
