The Purina Start & Grow is 18% protein but for grower i'd like 14-16% protein as i like my hens to develop nice and slow.  I've got one book that gives some ideas for lowering the protein level that i might try.  Or i might change them to Blue Seal, Agway, or DuMor grower and then move them back to Purina for layer feed when they get that age.

Our menagerie: 1 horse, 2 dogs, 6 cats, 2 rabbits, 1 guinea pig, 3 hamsters, 1 Silkie roo bachelor, 1 Ameraucana/Easter Egger roo, 1 Ameraucana/Easter Egger hen, 7 Golden Comet hens. RIP Puff and Mocha.

Chicks coming in April: Ameraucana, Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red.  Ducklings coming in April: Blue Swedish, Cayuga, Mallard.  More chicks come in July, all Buff Brahma.

Yes, I like my hens to develop slowly also.

I raised mine on homemade organic feed, ACV with garlic, D.E,  organic scrambled eggs, and kefir last year.  I got them at 1.5 wks old, from a local breeder who used medicated feed,  but didn't vaccinate.   So from 1.5 wks on they were completely organic.  Two of them turned out to be roos, so they all went to live on a friends farm, and are happy healthy free rangers today.

I just received 6 (non vaccinated) pullet chicks from MPC yesterday, and started them on the same feed I fed last year's brood.    I'm confident that we'll have the same success as last year, and I'll post progress updated for anyone interested in raising their chicks completely organic, and vaccine free.
