Flag at half staff for Whitney Houston - Page 7

I said should be...

There are folks who still think O.J. was innocent and I think they would want the flag at half mast.

Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton agreed on little publicly, but they did agree that when the public treasury becomes a public trough and the voters recognize that, they will send to government only those who promise them a bigger piece of the pie

I don't agree with the flags being flown at half staff for Whitney.  It would have been nicer for the governor to make a memorial or declare on the local radio or tv a minute of silence in her honor instead.

I agree with most that our flag flown at half staff was a bit over the top.  I too think a moment of silence or a short memorial speaking would have been sufficient.  I am very happy she was able to give to those less fortunate and that certainly makes her a very special person; but there are so many others that do the same..her music was great yes, but our flag at half staff..NO!

I had a friend who  was a great husband and father who passed away due to an unfornate combination of prescription medications for actual medical conditions and alcohol.  I think it is tragic if she was trying to clean up her life and died from a mixture of medications prescribed by a doctor.  Her children will be the ones living with her death.  I did not know about all the money she donated and think that it would be nice for the media to at least mention some of the good things she did in her life.  Too often we focus on the bad.  But I too think that there are other ways to honor people and lowering the flag in this case is not appropriate.  My thoughts are with her children and how addiction has effected them.  If she was not Whitney Houston she would have had her kids taken away.

love your post.

I am a music teacher. There are a lot of wonderful, talented musicians who  have families and are productive members of our community without getting strung out on drugs. I don't get why we are lowering our flag for Pop Icons. It's a statement of our society. We value less than healthy role models. I love Whitneys voice and what a sad ending. Let's keep our flag for our service men and women and keep intact the integrity of lowering it. Thanks for posting.

The mother of a local soldier here that was recently killed in action is sad and upset about the flag lowering and spoke out about it.  Story & video: http://www.abc15.com/dpp/news/region_west_valley/glendale/glendale-mom-angered-over-houston-honor

I wasn't alive at the time - but I know that flags were flown half staff for Elvis.  Was there this much of an uproar against it back then as there is now for Whitney Houston?  I'm not taking sides here or offering an opinion - just asking a question.

Although here's an interesting fact:

"The governor [Christie] noted he has ordered flags flown at half-staff for all 31 fallen New Jersey soldiers and every fallen police officer during his time in office."

And from living in New Jersey until recently - I can vouch for the times he did order half staff for fallen heroes.  Just sayin' is all - I'm not a big fan of Christie otherwise.

Elvis was a veteran.  And was much more popular than WH.  I do not remember if people were upset over it but singers dying from drug overdoses was relatively new and now people are sick of the pedestal that entertainers are put on which I am sure has changed peoples opinions of drug overdoses of celebs.
