I often wondered how chickens came to be called "chooks". Then last summer I raised four Speckled Sussex from day-olds. One of them, Judy, loves to be held and cuddled. The sound she makes when she is melting against my body is a soft, "Chook, chook, chook."  Her little body rocks with the sound, "Chook, chook, chook"

One matronly, yet regal, Light Brahma hen, two Silver-laced Wyandotte hens, two Gold-laced Wyandotte hens, one Black Cochin hen, three Ameraucana hens, one Buff Brahma hen, four sassy Speckled Sussex hens, one Buff Brahma roo, and one nineteen-year old cat who's scared of all of them, especially the roo.

Do you write books by chance? 'Melts against my body' is quite a term for chickens. smile.png

Hens under 1 year of age are pullets and hens over 1 year old are called biddies.
