What is your favorite reference book about breeding, raising and showing fancy poultry?  If you could only have one book, which one would you not want to be without?

the only one I have is Poultry Breeding and genetics by R.D Crawford. you can read most of it on google books..

The American Standard of Perfection.

 

 

Honestly most other info out there is online or gained through other subjects such as general genetics, poultry keeping, etc. But the one thing that really will answer a lot of at least my questions is the ASOP. It's not just for exhibition purposes.

It really depends on your purposes.  For phenotype the Bantam Standard and Standard of Perfection are the proper choices, for breeding and genetics information, there are a number of good references, for general poultry care, Storey's Guides are good choices.

I am finding that I have lots of information on general  chicken raising, but raising exhibition poultry is different, (I guess) ie, they need more space to make thier feathers look good?  different feeding technques to give them shine? stuff like that???? preparing them for shows, training them to be handled.

 

I have aquired lots of information now on "breeding schemes"  as far as who to breed to whom relationship wise, and in gathering that information if becomes apparent to me that even more important than relationship is selection of individual birds.  Are there tricks to selection besides just making sure that one bird is very strong where the other is weak, and never breed weaknesses together?   I guess those are the things that the 24 books I have seem to be missing....... or maybe I am just worrying about nothing again.  I am breeding silkies and silver spangled hamburgs if that matters.

The primary literature that I consistently use is the poultry press. I  will refer to the SOPs when I have a question. I need to explore this Internet phenomenon for some of this viewable relic literature. Thank you minister man for the link.

    If you go over to  and join this little list http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/sussex_breeders/   ...check the Database section .

I put a 63 book bibliography of on-line poultry lit there with links to the on-line lit. 

   If you don't find what you need there,  check Google Books  and use Advanced Search

http://books.google.com/advanced_book_search to keyword search for your specialty or HathiTrust Digital Library

http://www.hathitrust.org/ and do the same. Much obscure and valuable lit of specific topics in these places.

Making such databases is a pleasure of mine. Some people do crossword puzzles, I like to make no-discussion databases

for research purposes.  I also made one for canines  called Book Work and Breed History (BWBH) :
