Hi all! So happy to have found such a great site!!
I have been without birds for the last 14 years. "Back in the day" before divorce and selling my little farm, I was a 4H chicken Mom and Leader. We had several varieties, especially my favorite Silkies. We also had pigeons, waterfowl and turkeys. I have missed them soooo much!
I am finally at a place in my life where I can get back into my chickens, albeit on a MUCH smaller scale. My birds always had their own portion of my horse/goat barn, as well as a 10x12ft walk-in chicken coop for the more delicately feathered gang. There were many large fenced in pens and safe free range for their enjoyment.
That being said, it is much harder to plan my new coop, run, and which variety, (varieties??) to get, as I will be very limited on space, compared to what I was used to. I have greatly enjoyed looking at the coop pics and reading folks opinions of what worked, and what they would do differently. Hubby (a new improved model :) is a great carpenter, but he is very busy with work and school until fall, I so I have been looking at the "pre-fab" coops in small-medium sizes or tractor style arrangements. Can anyone recommend a company? Our Maine winters can be really windy, snowy and cold, even here on the coast, plus I need to have a secure coop for predator protection.
