i'd say hen, i've heard late spring they will start laying

5 RI reds, 2 NH reds, 2 Plymouth barred rocks, 2 Wyandottes and Annie,10 yr old black lab, Jack, 3yr old yellow lab, Christmas, 3 month old little mutt, Sally and Scooter 3 month old black kittens

Should I find her a male around the same age? It seems I can only find males about 3 years old or so.

I vote girl too! I have a hen and a tom both about the same age. My hen has a fuzzier head (feathers going up it), no snood, slightly smaller dewlap. My tom has a big snood by now (he'll be a year in May), that hangs over his beak, he fluffs out all the time (especially for my hen! lol), and he gobbles all the time. Whenever there's a loud noise, he's gobbling at it like it offended him. My hen will occasionally fluff up, but it's becoming less and less. When my tom first started "dancing" for her, he was pretty persistent and she reacted to that a couple times by fluffing up with him haha but now she's laying (I keep their coop nice and warm all night) and she seems to be accepting the persistent favor of my Tom more :)
