Is there a substitute for baby grit? Help!

By 'grit hopper' do you just mean a container? My babies are 3 weeks old today. I've been sprinkling the tiny grit over their food, plus we moved them to a new brooder cage and put a very thin layer of play sand on the bottom flat surface, then topped that with wood shavings. This has worked fantastic.

Yes, just any old container! Some people put up a fancy little container - I have seen pics of coops with them. What I use is simply a pan. Sometimes I throw it on the ground. I also mix some in the feed for insurance because I feed so many whole grains/seeds.
