Nesting Box Design?

I'm building a coop and need to know if the nesting box needs to have a roof? Or can it be open on top since it will be completely inside the coop?

It doesn't need a top but you might want to put a slanted top on it so, they can't roost on it and poop in it. Mine like the more enclosed nesting boxes I built better but, their fav is the kitty litter box w/top I put in to make sure they had enough. LOL

Your hens will nest where they want <g>!!  My ladies have several boxed, roofed in nest boxes, most of which they ignore.  They have preferred building their own nest in the corner of the coopy behind the feed bin (no roof), and since they free range, they are very fond of building nests in our hay bales (also no roof).

 

I'd say build them without a roof, and you can always add one later if they decide they will NOT lay in them.

I use milk crates as nest boxes! I cut the front side with a sawsaw and I screw them to the walls. One of the best thingd id that they are stackable! I only stack them 2 high but they work! I cut a piece of cardboard to go in the bottom to keep the shavings or straw in the box.
