Crossing Projects: Goals and Results

Hi, all!

Just thought I'd post a thread on this topic 'cause I haven't seen much response to it. Is there anyone out there who has a crossing project underway or is planning one? If so, what are your goals?

I'm not just talking about people who want to create the super-economical chicken, or the latest new breed, or the hottest new color. Though I would love to hear such stories and plans, I also want to recognize those who are trying to preserve rare breeds by "re-crossing" them to other breeds in that breed's history. Have these recrossings helped revive the type of your stock? Have they made more hardy offsprings? What are some flaws resulting from the recrossings that you are trying to work out?

Any other projects out there, I'd love to hear them! Even if they are about the super-economical chicken, or the latest new breed, or the hottest new color wink.png

God bless,

~Gresh~

My favorite breeds are: Kraienkoppe, Orloff, Thai Gamefowl, Leghorns

I am trying to re-breed the Huttegem, by crossing Swedes and Runners. The original breeds that are suspected to be in the extinct breed's make-up, are the Dendermonde (thedirect, and only, ancestor of the Swedish), and the Runner. This is a simple cross. I have a Swede who has a REALLY bad bib (actually, it looks VERY Huttegem-like) I'll use her.

I am outcrossing Cream Brabanters and Silver Appenzeller Spitzhaubens for genetic diversity. Both breeds have very limited gene pools in this country. Both breeds have been crossed with Polish in this country, but that creates all kinds of problems; wild crests, messy spangling, inappropriate beards or lack thereof. I have a Spitz with a beard she shouldn't have, so I'm crossing her with my Brabanter cock. Brabanters are supposed to have beards. I also have a very pretty Brabanter hen who lacks a beard. She's in with my Spitz cock. The Spitz/Brabanter cross will be sex linked. If I cross the females back to a Silver Spitz, I'll have all silver offspring by the second year. The Brabanter/Spitz cross is a little more complicated, and will take longer to get back to the correct color.

I was looking at your male in the second picture. He has a great comb. I was commenting last night on Jeremy's barred rock males he posted. This is the kind of comb he needs on his barred rock large fowl which you are using in your cross. You got some excellent color coming on the Delaware pattern. Hard to believe that is how this breed got started years ago. Hope the third cross brings more good barring in the neck and tails. You have one female that has excellent rock type but she is brown in color. bob

Need a gift for a love one go to my web site and look at my custom turned ink pens. A portion of my profits goes to charitys in our local area and one poultry club The Panhandle Poutlry Club in Penscola Florida. Two shows one in March and December

Thanks for posting your project, Banny! I wish I could say that I know what you're talking about, but I have no experience with ducks and probably never will so long as I am on acreage without a pond sad.png Could you post some pics for us?

Thanks for sharing this! It sounds like you have some good ideas going. Yes, I have heard about the Spitzhauben-crossed-with-Polish problem, and I am glad that you are one of many dedicated fanciers who are trying to correct it wink.png

Yes it is a very frustrating problem in this country! It is up to us as breeders to correct that problem!

Wow, looks like you have a very good project running! I'm not too familiar with Delawares, but by George those are very Delaware-ish to me! tongue.png Keep up the good work, and please continue to update us. thumbsup.gif
