The vet thinks it might be a respiratory infection. I've got to pick up some antibiotics tomorrow (Monday) and will let you know what happens.

A respiratory infection would make a swelling back there? Huh...hu.gif Hope she gets better! BTW she's pretty...

Thanks. She is pretty, isn't she. I'll find out more when I talk to the vet more tomorrow (so far he's just seen the photos). I suppose the antibiotics are a bit of a 'safe bet' - hopefully they'll clear it up, whatever it is.

Hello everyone,

 

I am pleased to say my hen is on the road to recovery! The swelling/lump started to decrease in size yesterday and is much, much better this morning. I only started the antibiotics yesterday afternoon, so I guess she was already on the mend, but I will continue with them for a few days just to be on the safe side.

 

All the vet said was that he believed it was some sort of sinusitis. The antibiotics are spiramycin and oxytetracycline.

 

All being well, I should be getting 2 more hens next week, once this one is fully recovered.

I am no vet, and I don't pretend to be an expert on chickens, injuries, or anything else, but I think it was a bruise/swelling from a bump and would have gone down on it's own.  The antibiotics will not hurt, especially with bringing in new hens, but next time you might save the expense....just a thought.

Thanks for posting this tread. One of our chix, Pix, suddenly had a swollen ear lobe. Of course I start to google about what could it be? Thanks to the pics on this tread I decided it was the most similar to Pixie's condition. (not a strain of wild bird cholera!)  A few days later the one ear is looking better, and the other ear is beginning to swell. 
 

She's eating well and acting normal. The other girls are leaving her and her large lobes alone. She's looking a little pale, but it's January after all, most of the birds look pale. 

 

We've added a touch of apple cider vinegar to the water, other simple nutritionally beneficial snacks with tumeric and other simple herbs. Plenty of dark leafy green scraps from the garden.

 

Any other tips for nutritional supplements are welcomed.

 

I'll post pics in case anyone else finds this useful!
