For those with problems with the chicks that died a few days after hatching, I had the same problem a couple of years ago, I had used hay in the brooder as bedding, they were eating it, I did not have any grit in the brooder for them and had gotten some bad feed. i no longer use that brand of medicated chick feed and use grit if I use hay as bedding, they will also eat pine shavings, so recommened or not, I generaly use newspaper with paper towel on top of the newspaper for the 1st week.

Hi, I'm joining super late. Set my 42 eggs on the 7th. Had a  failed attempt at candling on the 14th (shells dark, poor light). Lockdown yesterday. Lots'o peeping and 1 pip today. Maybe hatching a day early tomorrow.

Are early hatchers more likely to have external yolks? What do you do about it if it happens?

So far with early hatchers I have only had 2 or 3, sometimes the yolk goes ahead and asorbs, sometimes not, there is not a lot you can do either way, some have looked like they have scrambled egg stuck on theur belly, kind of gross looking though.

Here is my consolation prize, on day 22 of my failed hatch, lady gwen was born at 2pm!! So I'm happy. Also, I found out that the 24 eggs of my flock that went down the road, 18 are rockers and today is hatch day and I will get to see those babies soo and tell how my flock's chicks will look like. Also, here is a link for troubleshooting incubation problems: http://animalscience.ucdavis.edu/Avian/pfs33.htm

You should enter that pic in thebirdguy's Cutest Baby Picture Contest; you don't have to be in the hatch-a-long to enter.  PM the pic to thebirdguy and post it on Mahonri's 3rd Annual Easter Hatch-A-Long thread, saying which contest it is for.  Keep us updated on how the baby is doing.  She's so cute!
