Dogs killed and injured our entire flock of 55....crushed! - Page 2

I am so very sorry for your son.  As others have said, I would photographically document the carnage, report the incident to police/animal control, and attempt to identify the owners for reimbursement.

Around here, those dogs would have never seen the light of another day.

I have lost chickens to dogs before and I know what you are saying about not wanting to start again.

Give yourself a few days and then think about it again.

i know it royally sucks and is disheartening but I love having my birds and cannot think about not having them around.

I am very sorry to hear of your loss...I know it's hard on your son, too...

Determined dogs can get through, under, or over almost anything.  I would suggest hotwire - a few strands will discourage most large animals, including bears.

I'm so sorry to hear this but glad you got the dogs.

Take some time, then think about starting a new flock.  Secure your pens even better, (they must have  been very determined to get through hog paneling) and good luck.  I think you will find it is worth it.

So sorry for your loss! It's a hard lesson for your son, and hard to watch him go through it. But, kids are resilient, and I think that starting over - small to start with - will give him something to focus on. If we can be strong for our kids, they learn strength, too. If you do start over, I agree with the suggestions of hardware cloth and electric fence for your coops and runs. Glad you got the dogs. That, too, must have been hard, but necessary. Wishing your son all the best as he rebuilds his business.

I'm sorry, I know where you are coming from. The same thing happened to me except I chased that darn dog all the way up our road till I caught it and dragged it all the way back to my house, my BF wanted to shot all three of them, I knew they belonged to someone they all had 3 collars on. As we were deciding what to do with the dogs the owners came running up. Unlike your story, the owners were responsible, and paid me 60 dollars for the 4 birds they killed and even came back to say they were sorry and thank us for not shooting them ( they saw the BF had his side arm on). Some stories end up well even through tragidy. I hope you still start up again. Sending your son and family hugs.

That how i lost my entire flock except the dogs had a little help form their owner to unlatch my double door entry.  the sheriff officer was unhelpful telling me i had to have photo proof of the owner opening the doors, and as for the blood cover dogs the owner and cop denied they did it!! i later discovered the cop was their cousin.     i was so sick over it we torn down the coop.

Now they have moved and the new owners are responible dog owner.  so We are rebuilding
