Here we go again - I'm hatching more goslings!! - Page 198

Well, baby was faced the wrong way.  I was able to find its head, and was slowly able to get it free from where it was trapped under its foot.  It's breathing, but pretty weak.  I did get a little peep out of it.  I washed out an egg half and cupped it over part of the hole I had to make (rather larger than I would have liked) and covered most of the rest with damp gauze.  We'll see what happens...  I tried to get some pics, but they just aren't coming out clearly enough with my phone, and I can't find the @#$% camera.

Really?  They don't shut things down in this kind of weather? I grew up in hurricane land... and all stores/places were closed and boarded up a good 12 hours before storm edge came onshore.

  Iain dear.. we're under a tornado watch or warning from mid March till mid June is seams.... you can't stop life that long, but even children learn to watch the sky and listen to the radio.

I checked on 4th egg that I thought was gone. Far behind the first two, which pipped internally on the 11th. Movement was so slight, I wasn't sure I was really seeing any. I bit the bullet and broke in with a small hole, and baby was shrink wrapped, I think. Membrane was white and rather tough. I dampened what I could reach with a q-tip, and broke a hole through it, and within a couple moments, baby took a big breath! Can't quite see where its beak is, but it took a breath. I wasn't sure how to cover up the hole, but I put a piece of damp gauze over most of the opening, leaving a small air hole. Maybe 4th baby has a chance? I hope I did the right thing, going in. Seems very weak, and I don't see how it would have pipped internally through that membrane...

Sue, I cannot imagine living in tornado alley.  Hurricane land was bad enough, storms weren't very often, and we had plenty of warning to get prepared.

as far as living here... I've never lived amywhere else.  everywhere I've lived is within about a 70 mile area,

Sorry, we've been out cleaning brooders in the shop.  Just got back in.  Built a second chicken tractor today, so the laying ducks should be able to move outside from the brooder tomorrow.  Will be nice to have one fewer tub to clean.  :)  

2nd baby was careening drunkenly around the incubator, having woken up, and I just moved it out of there.  It's curled up and napping again, and the swollen area has receded a bit.  It seems to be doing well. 1st baby is extremely vocal, and drinking well.  Doesn't think much of the mash yet.

4th baby... I did wet the membrane when I first opened the shell, and again when I had to go in further.  Some of the membrane still has veins, and a few areas of veins appeared to have receded (gone brown).  Only got a couple tiny blood spots as I pushed back the membrane with a q-tip in the search of the head.  No huge amounts of blood welling up or anything.  As for the yolk, I couldn't see the whole thing, but I'd guess maybe 1/4-1/3 of your average chicken yolk?  Difficult to see.
