For what it is worth, I ordered 100 chicks from Privet last fall.  25 were rir.  I lost not a single chick.  I sold the RIR at three months, but they already were a very dark red.  I spoke with the lady I sold them to and she is VERY pleased with them.  They have started laying, and they are all a very dark red.  She says they are the nicest RIR she has ever had in 25 years.  I believe Privet price includes shipping also.

I would highly recommend Privet chicks in ANY breed.  Sorry I don't have a picture, she lives over an hour away from me.  There was nothing wrong with them..I just decided not to winter any chickens is why I sold them.

Oh, but if anyone is interested and can order a 50 chick minimum (maybe with some friends) Central Hatchery in Nebraska has EXCELLENT RIR.  THey are dark dark red as they should be.  The price is very good.  They charge 1.10 per chick for 100 pullet  chicks. They have a 50 chick minimum with a 5.00 surcharge for under 100 and you pay shipping.

They also have the HyLine Leghorns.  I have just ordered 200 rir chicks for April.

The birds in the picture from Privett appear to have pretty decent dark color.  I am betting you will be happy with them if you are only looking for egg layers that are darker than normal.  The birds pictured are quite a long way from the type that a good Heritage Rhode Island Red would exhibit.  I would not promote them as true Rhode Island Reds if they were mine.

ya im not ganna promote them as true RIRs. The hatchery does tho. I just like the looks of them. I hate production reds. They are soo differnt then RIRs. Soo im hoping for a darker color than the PRs. Ill Post picks when there older :D

I ordered the 50 minimum of the rir pullets from central. I recall my mom ordering the sil go link pullets 30 years ago. I am in need of a good utility breed to use as a cross but didnt want the hatchery mutts. Central chicks look like a great choice for rir pullets. I do believe they are the parent stock they use for their sil go links. Kinda stoked about getting these pullets. They ship April 2nd.
