i need to build an enclosed run, probably by myself..... all advice needed :-) - Page 2

If u already have 2x4's on the top of ur fence posts the easiest thing is to run 2x4 between them on top .Then attach hardware cloth between each 2x4. If u want to provide shade and protection from rain/snow,I used those corrugated panels called polycarbonate with 2x6boards placed on edge the length of the run and then 2x4's down the middle of the run perpendicular to the 2x4's connecting the fence posts. That gives a slant to it so rain and snow run off. I'm only 5'4'' and managed to do it, so u probably can too.

Rainbow eggs and self sufficiency.

A few question to consider, first

snow load..... How much snow will be on the structure?

wind force and direction of the roof as it faces the wind?.

Shed roof or gable roof ?

run off.... rain wash?

and will you be walking on it to remove snow at any time?

building code..... in some ares building codes and tax codes may apply.

Its best not to ask too many building code question at your town ship office.

A roof should be supported 24 inches on center, but you could get away with 30-32 depending on roof load.

I hope this helps

well, i started to work on enclosing my existing run. raised the walls to the top of the posts. next was going to be something to create a roof.

today, i went out ( all the chickens were locked up in the pen) and i found feathers everywhere :-(  some in the yard, which means a couple got out somehow and the rest were in the pen, but NONE were in the coop. i couldn't find a hole or 'break in' point anywhere. my last 6 layers..... gone :-(

needless to say i am making major changes now.   first, i'm moving the entire coop/ pen set up to a spot up by the house.  second, i'm building an entirely enclosed space, like a screened in porch.  and i'm going to build it around the coop.

i have 20 chicks and i am so sadden and depressed that  this could be their future too :-(  i am HOPING that  whatever it is will realize that there are no more birds to get and will move on to another food source.  my  20 chicks are safe. no one can get them.  but, as the weather gets nice i will need to move them out. so, i better get moving on making my changes and building my predator proof coop/ pen.

it makes me so sad that my birds will never be allowed to free range again :-(

thank you to everyone that responded. i appreciate your time!  i thought i was making positive changes......
