Greetings from Arlington, VA...

...where zoning requirements make it all but impossible to keep chickens.

I am brand new to chickens, and have only just realized what a big world of backyard chickens it is out there! Here's how I found my way to you:

One of my neighbors started a group called The Arlington Egg Project last spring. Their objective is the modification of Arlington County ordinances so that residents can keep a limited number of backyard hens.

I recently became involved with the Arlington Egg Project when my fledgling screen-printing company adapted one of our chicken t-shirt designs for them.  We happened to have a chicken design we were working on, just for fun. One Sunday, the Washington Post had 3 separate reference to "urban chickens", so we decided we needed to make our chicken an Urban Chicken! I contacted my neighbor to offer a couple of shirts to use as door prizes or whatever at an upcoming Arlington Egg Project event. We were invited to attend the event and sell shirts. It was such a fun evening, our shirts were very successful and I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary "Mad City Chickens" that was screened that evening. It really got me thinking.

I came home and fell down the rabbit hole of online research on urban hens. I've been having a good time looking at pictures of chickens, backyard chicken coops and reading people's stories about their life with chickens. I'm here to begin to educate myself now, and be prepared if and when Arlington County changes the current ordinance to allow backyard hens.  :-)

So, hey everybody!

Helen: Daria, do you have to look at everything in such a negative light?

Daria: Could you possibly be referring to the harsh light of reality?
