I have 12 hens and they lay between 7am and 4pm.

If what I've read is correct, it takes 25 1/2 hours for a chicken to make an egg--did I get that right? It does seem about right to me; i.e., my 5 gals each lay an egg but about an hour or so later each day, until one of them skips a day because the hour is too late (dusk); then I only get 4 eggs and the next morning that chicken lays one early, like at 6:30 a.m. or so, and starts the cycle again. Today I had all 5 eggs by 11:00 a.m., first time I'd checked.
Last summer my Silkies layed at any time during the day. I usually didn't find eggs until about 7pm. Through the winter and into spring they have been laying between 11am-1pm. It will be interesting to see how the summer goes this time around.

I have a 9 month old RIR that lays around 7-8PM. She is a shy layer too. If anyone is around she will stop laying and wait for you to leave. She is free range and she comes back to the coop to her own special box and lays.
Mine lay at odd hours of the day and it changes every day. Though I almost always have an egg first ting in the morning when I let them out, but I'm not sure if she is an early morning or late night layer. One of my white egg layers always lays in the evening after about 4, most lay earlier though randomly through the day. Luckily they all (bot one) lay in the nest boxes. Since they freerange, I'm glad I don't have to go on an egg hunt every day. The one that doesn't lay in the boxes has made herself a little well in the deep litter in the corner under the roost and lays there every day.
That makes perfect sense! They have a 23 hour egg forming cycle.
I have 15 hens and 1 just started laying yesterday around 6 PM.
