I am new to raising chickens. I got 3 serama babies who were hatched on 2/07. One has grown a noticeable bigger comb than the other two. Can anyone tell which is boy and which one is a girl. Thanks,.

too young.

I became interested in hatching and raising chickens during a genetics class where we manipulated the genetic code of chicken embryos. One year later, I have many chickens, mostly Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers. I believe in order to truly respect and appreciate chickens, you must hatch them on your own. I still attend college and live with my parents, who graciously accepted my chicken habit on...

They worn hatched on 2/7. This make them 25 days old today, a little shy to 4 weeks old.

Yeah. I know it is too young to tell. But given the noticeable difference among them, especially the brown one with bigger pink comb, I hope someone can cast an early prediction. I hope they can turn out to be one roo and two girls. Thanks, anyway.

This is the best way to tell the little ones sex.

It won't hurt them to do this.

Pick up the chick after its a few days old by the head.

After it stops kicking in a few seconds, if it holds its legs down its a hen, if it holds its legs up and keeps kicking and clawing its a roo.

Works about 95% or better. If in question wait a day and repeat and see the results.

Heres an interesting article:

Please do not pick up your chicks by their heads.  Very cruel and you could injure them.  Has never proven to be anything other than an old wives tale.  As you see from this article, not only does it not work, but people cant even make up their minds which way would determine a boy or a girl.  Some say legs hanging is a girl, some say legs hanging is a boy.  At any rate, its nothing anyone should be doing.

I once went to a chicken convention years ago and they had lots of baby chicks on display.  I happened to meet the President of the group and asked that very question "how can to tell the boy chicks from the girl chicks" I remember his reply to this day.  He said "It is very easy you get a plait of worms and set it down among the chicks and invariably the boy chicks will eat the girl worms and the girl chicks will eat the boy worms".  I SCRATCHED MY HEAD AND SAID WELL HOW DO YOU TELL THE BOY WORMS FROM THE GIRL WORMS?  HE SAID "HELL IF I KNOW I'M A CHICKEN SPECIALIST NOT A WORM SPECIALIST!
