Brooding my first turkeys now. Started with 10 newly hatched, broad breasted bronze on Wednesday. All were brave and active but did notice now again I'd see one fall on its back and not be able to get back up right. Can't tell if it was always the same bird or not. Woke up to one dead this morning and the after breakfast found one the verge. I've got it on my chest trying to warm and stimulate it now, but not seeing much 'try' from this bird. My vet and a friend who raises commercially both told me it is not uncommon for turkeys to 'just lay down and die' with no warning. Frustrating.....
Is the feed fresh (check the date on the label), and what is the protein level? BBB need high protein feed, lots of fresh clean water, and FRESH food. The vitamins dissipate and the oils go rancid in commercial feeds when stored for long.
What is your brooder temperature under the lamps, and in the coolest area?
Are you adding anything to the feed or water other than turkey/gamebird starter?
Describe the brooder, is it on concrete or dirt, is it a wire floored raised pen, is it a box or tub? Indoors or outdoors, or in an unheated barn?
Jumbo Cornish crosses and Broad Breasted turkeys do sometimes flip do to heart failure. But not typically in the first week, that comes later, especially to overfed, inactive birds.
