Unexpected New Chick! - Page 2

Yay!  You did your good deed.  Thank goodness you did something because apparently no one else was going to.

Chicken Picken... pleeeeease call the store location you went to that had the pasty butts and follow up with a manager.  Or, post the location and I'll call them.  It's only a phone call.  Poor chicks!  Why don't they have people selling these things that know something about them??

Started the "Chicken Experience" in Spring 2012 with 9 chicks (1 Buff Orp, 2 White Rock, 1 Partridge Rock, 1 Salmon Faverolles, 1 Brown Leghorn, 3 EE) and 2 Pekin ducklings.

About 5 mins later another worker walked by and the girls says shes taking off for the night he asked if she tended fully to the chicks and she said yup i gave them food and water. I couldnt believe it. SO as i was paying for my items i told the girl at the register about it. But who knows if they did anything about. I was so sad all night thinking of those poor babies. It makes me not wanna shop there any more and im there a lot. So I really hope that girl spoke up to a manager or someone and the chicks were tended to.

*Im glad you saved your little fluff ball and that manager handled it well*

Oh my gosh! That is terrible. Let's hope that someone purchased them and cleaned them up. Poor things.

Congrats on the new chicky and for saving her life.  You did the right thing and so did that manager.

Oh this is why I love BYC! I searched wing sexing and this forum is full of info. Let me try to find some for you. It works best on chicks that are 1 to 4 days old, but not all chicks. Be careful if you google search "chick sex" ep.gif

I know that wiping a lil chicks bum is not a glamorous thing, but it's  part of the responsibility that is assumed when you are dealing with chicks.

It never hurts to tell them that there is a sick one...or to ask for a discount because it's sick.

Pffft....I am already wiping a few of my Marans' bums! What's one more?

This slideshow shows what to look for: http://animalsciences.missouri.edu/reprod/ReproTech/Feathersex/sld001.htm

"Many breeds can be sexed by examination of their primary wing feathers just after hatching. The females have staggered rows at the tips of their feathers (think: at the tips of their fingers) with little fluffs of feather. The males have a single even row with less or no fluffs, just the blunt tip."

Now if I can find the list of breeds that I saw once upon a time, I will pass it on.

This is a list I found, but I don't know how reliable it is:

Breeds that have the K allele, so should be feather sexable, are:
Brahma
Cochin
Langshan
Dorking
Cornish
Sussex
Orpington
Australorp
RIR
New Hampshire
Barred Rock
Wyandotte
Delaware
Jersey Giant

Breeds that have the k+ allele, so won't be feather sexable:
Leghorn
Minorca
Andalusian
Ancona
Buff Catalana
Brabanter
Campine
