Ours are free-ranged in a backyard...not quite sure what you mean! Does "free-ranged" mean "no fences?" If so, yes. However, I think that many people that free-range use fences, just big ones. Anyway, it's a bit of a complicated question. hmm.png

Mmmmmhu.gif ummmmm, a little of everything. LOL I live in a place where people own vacation cottages. So we coop/run when folks are in town.  When no one is here we run/free range.  Free range when I'm outside.  I don't want to leave the girls completely unattended as we have dogs that roam the neighborhood.

Welcome to BYC and greetings from Maryland.

City won't let us free range our chickens... but often I will let mine out for 30 mintues to scratch in the grass before bed time.

Keeper of 26 hens,  4 PW Leghorns, 1 leghorn mix, 1 FBCMarans, 1 Australorp, 1 Buff Orpington, 2 Mama Olive Eggers w/ 15 chicks each, 1 EE, a Barred Rock, a RIR, a CQ, 1 Delaware, 1 Black Star, a Splash Ameraucana, 3 W/BW Ameraucana pullets, 5 polish, 2 Welsummers and 41 juvies of various breeds. YIKES!  Time to SELL some chickens!
